Why Music Classes Are So Important In Public Schools

Updated on March 4, 2013

One of the biggest problems in today's world is public schools' financial needs. They need to make sure they have enough money for sports, science equipment, textbooks, etc. so they ask themselves what can we drop to get more money? A lot of school systems, especially public schools, are starting to cut the music programs. Sports are popular, and they need the equipment to make the major subjects successful.

I've been taking band class for 7 years now, and it's made me into the person I am today. My high school band class is like my second family. I go to a not so fancy public high school. My original plan was to go to a magnet school for their band program. My best friend is 2 years older then me and she was going to the high school I go to now, and said before you choose, come backstage at my winter concert and meet the teacher and see what its like. When I walked in, everyone greeted me and welcomed me into their "family" with open arms. Then I met the band teacher. Today, this man is like my older brother. I don't have the greatest home life at times, and he helps me however he can. We are seriously like best friends. My band class is a family. We look out for each other and make sure everyone is alright through any situation. And not to brag, but we have some of the best rising musicians in all of Maryland.

But, enough about my story. The real concern is: Why are these music programs being taken away from these kids? Not every class serves this great opportunity to help kids grow and expand their talents. Do you know how much band camps can cost? And what about buying their own instruments? And in schools, they get to have that class all year for as long as they want. People don't realize that feeling you get when being able to free your mind when playing an instrument. That is a dream hobby for many kids; everyone has one. Would you like to take that away from the children who will be adults soon? How can someone just selfishly just take a child's happiness away for a new football jersey when the school got new jerseys made just last year?!

Being in a band, piano, guitar or even a music for life class can be like a second family to kids, just like any other subject, team, or club. Everyone deserves that right to feel comfortable and be able to do something they love and something that makes them feel good about themselves.
