A British Sit Com-Allo Allo-"Listen very carefully, I shall say 'zis only once!"

Updated on June 3, 2014

British Sit Com At It's Best

In the states we rely of Public Broadcasting to provide us with shows from the BBC. I have always been a fan of the British Sit Com ever since I discovered them on late night television. I love to laugh and began watching in the early 80's when most of my friends and family had no idea what I was talking about when I said I watched British Comedy. To me they were something I waited for to complete my long day and provided comedy relief.

My husband soon got hooked on them too and each night after the kids were tucked away we would spend time together enjoying a good laugh. Unlike typical American humor it take a bit of cultural understanding and knowledge of British humor. The Allo Allow series which consisted of over 80 show stressed the humor that could be found in World War II from a British point of view. The show set in France required the characters to use French accents along with British humor.

Each night we would laugh our heads off when Michele from the French Charles de Gaulle Resistance would enter the scene and repeat her "listen carefully" line to Rene while hiding in a closet or hanging from a window. It was the line we waited for every time we watched. We laughed every time and came to expect her delightful entrance.

The fact that the show was broadcast on PBS affected the episodes we saw and the order in which we watched the show. It took us a long time to understand the show from beginning to end. Many other British sit coms were also broadcast and we learned to love the British sense of humor and of course the many other show that were also shown. Since that time we have collected all of our favorites shows on DVD and usually pull them out when we need a good laugh.

There's plenty of laughter in store when an unbelievably quirky contingent of sales clerks makes shopping at Grace Brothers the comic experience of a lifetime. For the first time, all 69 episodes of this classic Britcom have been gathered together in one deluxe collection. Each episode is presented uncut and has been lovingly restored. Also included are two bonus discs containing over five hours of extra material!

Chicken soup machine repairman and intergalactic loser Dave Lister awakes from suspended animation to discover he is the lone survivor of a radiation leak and is now three million years into deep space and the last surviving member of the human race. Dave is soon joined by a hologram of his dead bunkmate, a life-form who’s evolved from his pet cat, and a neurotic sanitation mechanoid. Together this unlikely bunch of heroes attempt to find their way back to Earth, under the guidance of Holly, the ship’s senile computer, encountering a whole heap of smeg on the way.

Bean, Bean, maniacal nut / The more you watch, you bust a gut! First unleashed in 1989, this sketch series was embraced by PBS viewers in the United States. In the tradition of the great silent clowns, Rowan Atkinson created a character with universal and multi-generational appeal (the sketches have little dialogue and are driven by often ingenious physical comedy).

Very well acted and great scripts. 'Fawlty Towers' is, I reckon, the best of the best Aunty Beeb sitcom programmes.

Easily one of the funniest British sitcoms. The sheer genius of the British undercover agent posing as a Gendarme and speaking pigeon English 'as if' it was poor French is hilarious. 'That's why I am wroting this cimment on your lons' :)
