Beach Boys Still Cruisin'

Updated on July 25, 2014

Time to grab your Beach Boys tunes and head to the beach! That's how it was back in the late 80's when I lived in Michigan. My friends and I would head to Lake Michigan after classes to hang out and listen to music. Beach Boys was always at the top of the list. Even though Kokomo wasn't in Michigan it was still our Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, and Bahama times. Going to the beach dipping our toes into the lake, feeling the sand beneath our toes was our Kokomo time!

Kokomo was released as a single in July 1988. In 1989 it was recorded on their Still Cruisin' album. The song is about two lovers taking a relaxing vacation in Florida Keys at a place called Kokomo. Truly a big hit with a catchy tune. I still catch myself even today singing along to the song.

About The Band

The Beach Boys band formed in 1961 then signed on with Capital Records in 1962. The members of the band are three brothers Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and a friend Al Jardine. They sang songs about youth culture of surfing, cars and romance. From that time the band has recorded many great hits. Two of the members are now gone. Dennis drowned in 1983 and Carl Wilson went with cancer in 1998. David Marks joined for a year in the beginning then left; came back in 1997. Bruce Johnston joined in 1965; left in 1972 then returned in 1978. The legacy still continues. In 2012 was there 50th Anniversary. The band toured United States, Canada, Spain, Italy Denmark, Germany, Belguim, Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Australia and England; then recorded their latest album Beach Boys Live that came out in 2013. The album is filled with all the favorites they've ever sang. Clearly their music lives on.

The good 'ol Beach Boys can still get the groove on! After all these years it's so great to see there still together. Truly some really groovy music. While I was writing this I had the tunes playing. So hard to not get up and dance. I love that the Beach Boys music is so FUN! In the end thinking about what my Kokomo was back in the late 1980's sure brings back memories! I'm ready to grab my tunes and head to the beach!
