Best Fantasy Movies 2013

Updated on October 2, 2014

Top 5 Fantasy Movies 2013

I am really looking forward to the best fantasy movies 2013 has to offer for so many reasons. I am a huge fan of fantasy and love the magic and other worlds that authors and movie directors are able to produce.

I love fantasy movies where you get lost in the story and are quickly absorbed and forget that it's not reality! You can forget the hustle and bustle of life. You can leave your woes at the door and step into another realm where there are bigger dangers, more evils and unknown factors. There are surprises everywhere and someone has to step into the breach and at least try to fix things.

Here is my list of the 2013 fantasy movies I'm dying to see! Tell us which movies you wanna see too.

So Why Only The Top 5 Fantasy Movies of 2013?

This is my list of the top 5 fantasy movies 2013. I am a fantasy fanatic and have read almost every fantasy novel I can get my hands on. This doesn't stop me from loving fantasy films, but actually makes me love them more.

It's a real treat to see a fantasy novel adapted to the big screen, bringing the pictures in my head to life. However, when a fantasy movie is not done well it can be a huge disappointment. I hate to be let down or for a movie to fall short.

You might be wondering why I have made a list of only the top 5 fantasy movies and that is because I have tried to stay true to the genre!

This list does not include superhero movies 2013, animated movies 2013 or 2013 sci-fi movies. I have written a separate top ten list for each of those.

I hope you like what I think will be the best fantasy movies in 2013.

Which of these fantasy movies will go on to become the highest grossing movies of 2013?

The Best Fantasy Movies 2013

Listed in order of when they will be available to watch at cinema's. So you don't miss any of these great movies!

Beautiful Creatures

The Dark Versus The Light!

The Beautiful Creatures started life as a book series, by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Although the book series isn't as popular as it could be it is a very compelling read. It will probably become more popular after the first movie airs and everyone rushes out to buy it because they can't wait for the next installment of the story.

Beautiful Creatures is now available on DVD.

I'd never heard of these books either and I am a huge fantasy reader. However, since writing this list I have read the first book in the series and can't wait to read the others! From the trailer it's exactly the kind of fantasy I like!

You can get the Beautiful Creatures book series on Amazon and we can read them together!

Twilight fans especially would love this book series! Beautiful Creatures could be the next Twilight since the Bella and Edward story is finished.... for now.

I am looking forward to the Beautiful Creatures movie because it follows the story of the books fairly closely. It's about a girl that has problems at school. She's now onto her third school because mysterious accidents happen wherever she goes. However, when she starts her new school she finds a boy is mysteriously drawn to her. He finds out she's not a normal girl and instead discovers her family are cursed. You'd be right to think this is similar to Bella and Edward but with a gender role reversal.

Lena Duchannes is a Witch. She's counting down the days until her 16th birthday, at which point she will be chosen to serve the good or the evil side. Her love for a human boy could be her salvation or it could lead to her downfall if Seraphin, the Queen of evil, is able to use it to her advantage.

However, throughout all the trials and tribulations Lena does her best to stay in the light and fight the darkness within herself. Will love prevail? Will she be able to find a cure to her curse? Will she find another way that no-one else before her has found?

Look out for the war between Jeremy Iron's character and Emma Thompson's character.

I see this movie as being a cross between Twilight and the Craft.

Beautiful Creatures is due to be released in cinema's from February 14th 2013. Will this make a great movie to go and see on Valentine's Day? This has to be one of the best fantasy movies 2013!

The Best Fantasy Movies Are Based on Books

As you go through this list, you'll quickly realize that all the best fantasy movies 2013 are actually based on books. I haven't chosen these movies because they were originally books, although I love most of the novels that have been adapted into movies. Hollywood tends to choose great books and adapt them into movies.

Most fantasy movies require enormous budgets to set the right atmosphere, create a new world and characters and make sure there are little or no plot holes. Developing a book into a movie means most of these plot issues have been resolved. Plus the movie comes with a built in audience who already know the story and can't wait to see the movie!

As long as the movie is sympathetic to the book, in most cases these type of fantasy movies can go on to be huge box office hits. This is also the case with the highest grossing movies of 2012.

Oz The Great and Powerful

Oz The Great and Powerful is a prequel to The Wizard of Oz and offers an explanation of how the mighty Wizard actually got to Oz. You see, he was just a normal guy like Dorothy was a normal girl. If you've ever wondered how it was that the Wizard knew Dorothy had to fly home, it's because he came through a storm to get to Oz too.

Unfortunately, there will be no Dorothy in this version as it's set decades before she shows up. However, you might get to find out why the evil witch is green. You'll also meet some of the classic characters such as the little people and Glenda the "good witch".

It's also starring Mila Kunis and Rachel Weiz and the illusionist who becomes the hero and thus the Wizard of Oz - he has no idea what the rules are in Oz. He doesn't even know who the evil witches are!

The scenery in this movie is astounding, along with the special effects. Make sure you check it out from March 8th 2013.

The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones

The Mortal Instruments - City of Bones is another movie based on a book series, but this time by Cassandra Clare.

Again Twilight fans and fantasy fans will love this movie as it involves another world and Shadowhunters, who are descended from Angels.

Shadowhunters are raised to fight demons, vampires, werewolves and other halflings that humans are totally unaware of. That is until a supposedly human girl named Clary sees them killing someone in the middle of a nightclub. Her friend can't see what she's screaming about. Only Shadowhunters and other halflings can see each other. Humans are completely oblivious to this world within their world.

Clary finds her family has kept many secrets from her about her past and that she is actually a Shadowhunter too. These secrets have caused her mother to be kidnapped and Clary will need to rediscover her past if she is to save the Shadowhunters from a great evil. And no Twilight like movies would be complete without a love triangle. Jace and Simon both have feelings for Clary.

I have read this book series and I am really excited to go and see The Mortal Instruments, but will have to wait until August 23rd 2013.

I'm most looking forward to seeing Jamie Campbell Bower (played Arthur in the tv series Camelot), Johnathan Rhy Meyers (Henry the VIII in the Tudors), Robert Sheehan (Nathan Young in Misfits) and Jared Harris (David Robert Jones in Fringe). However, I am most looking forward to seeing Lena Headey playing the role of Jocelyn Fray (she's amazing as Cersei Lannister in Game of Thrones)

I think Mortal Instruments could be one of the best fantasy movies 2013 produces.

You can see just how great this series is by reading the books first. There are five books in the series so far and it's a very easy read as they are aimed at the teen market.

There's still time to read The Mortal Instruments before the movie airs...

Fantasy versus Science Fiction

For me, fantasy normally involves another world that defies the laws that we live by. For example witchcraft, magic, dragons, mythical creatures and other worlds that don't exist. On the other hand is science fiction, which I interpret as something that possibly could happen such as time travel, worm holes, black holes, space travel, other realities etc.

I like both science fiction and fantasy for different reasons. Answer the poll below and let us know which you prefer and why.

The Seventh Son

The Seventh Son is due to air in cinema's from October 18th 2013.

There isn't a lot of information out about this movies yet, except that it's based on a series of books called The Last Apprentice by Joseph Delaney. There are over ten books in the series, so if it is as popular as I hope it will be there is plenty of material for subsequent movies.

A few casting details have also been leaked and we know that Jeff Bridges will play the local Spook who is responsible for fighting evil spirits. However, he is aging and none of his previous apprentices have managed to step up to the role.

A great evil escapes and the local Spook can no longer fight the fight. He must teach the next generation to take over the battle of good against evil. He needs a seventh son to be able to defeat the powerful Mother Malkin (played by Julianne Moore).

Expect this to be a magical fantasy movie that is set in the 18th century, and will require a lot of walking or horse riding. It will have a lot of similar elements to movies where the wizard teaches his young apprentice the art of their craft.

I imagine there will be lots of dark cloaks worn and swords and knives will be the main weapons carried, apart from any magic or powers that others can wield. I expect this will be quite a dark movie and I am really looking forward to it.

The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug

I first read the Hobbit many years ago when I was about ten years old. My father gave it to me since I loved to read books. It was one of the best fantasy books I ever read and I quickly devoured it.

I am so excited that they are making the Hobbit into a movie and that the second installment, entitled The Desolution of Smaug, will be aired in cinemas from December 13th 2013.

While you wait to watch the movies, read The Hobbit book!

To think I can see a lot of my favorite characters from The Lord of the Rings movies again is amazing and with Peter Jackson at the helm once again. I am most looking forward to seeing Sir Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Hugo Weaving as Elrond and Andy Serkis as Gollum. There are many other great actors in the Hobbit 2, including Evangeline Lily, Cate Blanchett, Christopher Lee, Ian Holm, Billy Connolly and of course Elijah Wood.

I'd love to tell you more about what happens in the second part of the Hobbit, but I don't want to spoil the film for you.

I can tell you the Hobbit is set before The Lord of The Rings and tells the tale of how a Hobbit left his hometown with a wizard and a group of dwarves to go on an adventure. It's basically how Bilbo first met Gollum and attained "the Precious".

I anticipate that Peter Jackson will not stray too far from the plot laid out in the books as he was very sympathetic to The Lord of The Rings trilogy. Although I do worry that a single book has been split into three movies.
