The Bletchley Circle All Women Crime Fighter Series Was Very Interesting
Four Women Fight Crime That Confuses Everyone
Crime Thriller in Late 1960s is very intriguining
This was a British crime drama series that caught my attention on Netflix. The photos make this one appear a little snobbish. But it is far from it. When it comes to women, they lead two lives, one which is intensely personal and another one which is public and gives very limited insight to the personal one. This series shows both sides quite beautifully. The series is timed about 7-8 years after the war. There are multiple murders happening in London. It casts a shadow of fear in and above the surroundings of this city.
All women working together have one thing in common, they have worked as code crackers during the war in a place called 'Bletchley Park' well known for its solving the enigma cypher. These four women are gifted with different abilities in the code cracking. These abilities range from eidetic memory to statistics, patterns, etc. These women however, were not together after they war. Each goes their own way and are leading lives that suit them.
They do come together in the first part of the series named 'Cracking the Killer's Code' a suspense drama.
What is 'Cracking the Killer's Code'?
Young pretty women have been dying in and around London. Though the police have found 6-7 bodies so far, there is no telling who he is and when he will strike. Susan who has settled well in matrimony and has two children notices a pattern which she finds suspicious. Susan played by Anna Maxwell Smith, tries to crack the code only to be unsuccessful. While she does notice a pattern, she knows she is not enough to crack this code and that she will need help of her old pals. She goes out to 'Jean' played by Julie Graham, Lucy - Sophie Rundle and Millie played by Rachel Stirling. All these four women are reluctant to use their skills once more. But when another body appears they decide to fight it out for the sake of women who were killed.
As they start studying the places where dead women are found they find many points where he could be operating from. Further investigation leads them to a new place where they discover body of another young woman. Research leads them to the murly details of psychological warfare during the war. They already find out how criminal interacts with these young women and where. For every crime committed someone with a mental problem has already been indicted, which is the strategy of the criminal.
However, finding the person proves difficult, Susan has to use herself as a pawn and ventures into murderer's liar. Only to be saved in time by other ladies. After the first case Susan ends up moving to another place with her husband and family. Here is where another code-cracker comes in and forms the group again who cracks another mystery which is both intriguing and full of suspense.
Next Case is 'Blood on Their Hands' followed BY 'Uncustomed Goods'
Alice Merren another code cracker has been found guilty of murder, she has accepted the verdict without fighting, however, out ladies already know her and know that she is scarcely the person to do such a deed. Moreover, she was in love with the person for whose murder she was found guilty. This makes all ladies visit her, upon investigating their room they find out the truth that she had a a daughter and she has kept quiet because she thinks the daughter is the murderer. However, further investigation reveals murky truth about the establishment where the murdered man worked in.
The third case is about human trafficking where Millie finds herself in a bit of a fix when she is unwittingly involved in mafia dealings. She is kidnapped where she comes in contact with a girl who has been brought to the country from a Slovak country and expects she will be joined by her sister. The sister would be sold off to some man. Millie gets help of all her friends with Alice now becoming a part of their group. They together crack the code and find whereabouts of next shipments of smuggled goods and young girls.
The series was discontinued...
Though this series was discontinued, it keeps on entertaining and is perhaps the most tightly woven crime thrillers involving all women as crime fighters of all time. None of the women try to be like men or outsmart men. They act like every other woman, only to be extraordinary and successful. The motto of these women is 'Never be Ordinary'.
