Top 100 Best Comedy Movies

Updated on August 19, 2013

List of Greatest Comedy movies

Comedy is Perhaps the most loved genre by audience. This genre is as old as the industry itself. From the golden era of Charlie Chaplin and Oliver hardy to modern days of satirical comedies, comedy movies haven't lost the charm and fun.

I have seen many comedy movies some were great, some were good some were plain stupid. So i thought of making a list of all the funny comedy movies that i think are the best.Being a fan of stand up comedies and comedy acts i tried to focus on comedy films of various decades that used extra ordinary plot and talent and were listed among pure comedies.

Choosing the best comedies of all time is not an easy job as more than half of the movies produced every year are of comedy genre - be it romantic comedy or Horror comedy. But of course there are funny films that remains in your heart and mind forever and makes you laugh whenever you think about them.

Here is the list of 100 best comedy movies which were loved by almost everyone, praised by critics, did well at box office and had impact on pop culture. Also i selected my personal favorite Top 10 Best Comedy movies from the list of 100 best comedies.

Hope you will enjoy reading this list of best comedy movies as much as i enjoyed making it.If you find any of your favorite comedy film missing then do let me know in comments.

Note :- No animated Movie Is Included In the list.

You will find the best comedy movies of the decade of 20s to 00s.

Top 100 Comedy Movies - Vote Your Favorite funny Films

Here is the list of 100 best comedy movies of all time.

I know you might have seen many comedies in your life, But can you pick any one favorite flick? It would be hard but i dare you to vote only one film in the list.

10 Best Comedy Movies

Below is the list of my personal favorite Top 10 Best Comedy Movies

# 10. Borat - Come to Kazakhstan, It's Nice!

Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Full Screen Edition)
Borat - Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan (Full Screen Edition)

Let me clear you. Borat is no Non-sense movie. The film is one of the finest comedy film of all time. You will never see as funny mockumentary as Borat. Sacha Baron Cohen who starred in the title role actually also wrote the film.

Sacha wanted to make a funny documentary where real life incidents and reaction of people in reality is recorded. So he created the character of Borat who came from an Asian country Kazakhsthan to America to learn their culture and then to go back to his country and teach his people.

Borat was banned in several country due to its theme and due to its rude humor. Personally I disliked this thing. But if we rise above then we will see that Borat is nothing but a saga of a stupid manon a cross country voyage in foreign land.

I might have chose the 'Hotel Fight' scene from the film. But it was too offensive to display here. So i would go with this scene

# 9. The Hangover - What Happened Last Night?

The Hangover (Rated Single-Disc Edition)
The Hangover (Rated Single-Disc Edition)

No matter what you say I bet you have always dreamed of such kind of bachelor party. Todd Phillips was genius to come with such a brilliant idea. While I enjoyed Road trip and Old School too,but The Hangover was masterpiece of Todd Phillips.

Ed helms was funny,Bradley cooper was good but the man who stole the show was Zach.He really did great job from Tiger to Tyson he really made me laugh in every act. I have seen Hangover II and III but none was as good as the original. Also I liked the soundtrack of the film.

The Hangover gives a lesson too. You got life only for once so enjoy it to the fullest. Do all the things you wished you could do but never did as you thought it was not of your kind.

My favorite scene from the movie would be The one with the Tiger in the Bathroom. I literally fell off my sofa while watching it. Zach was awesome in this scene.

# 8. Dumb And DUmber - For Harry and Lloyd every day is a no-brainer.

Dumb and Dumber
Dumb and Dumber

You expected it?Didn't you? No Doubt Jim Carrey is one of the best comic actor who got his own style of humor. He made many good comedy movies but Dumb and Dumber is and i think will always be the best 'Jim Carrey movie'.

I am not saying that Jeff daniels performance as Harry dunes was any less but in the end it was Jim carrey who stole the show. From the into Limo scene to the final credits scene there is no single moment in the film where Jim carrey won’t make you laugh.

The plot of the film revolves around two dumbest pair of friends who took silly decisions and goes on a cross country race only to get plugged into the social pipeline. Farrelly brothers produced several comic flicks later on but none was as good as Dumb and Dumber.

I had too many laughs in the scene. The last laugh i had was on this scene. I couldn't imagine anybody could be as dumb as these two

# 7. Airplane - The craziest flight you'll ever take!

Airplane! (Don't Call Me Shirley! Edition)
Airplane! (Don't Call Me Shirley! Edition)

Airplane increased the fan-following of ZAZ (Zucker-Abraham-Zucker).The film has no particular story or plot, just laughs and lots of laughs.A Perfect spoof movie that parodied many classic films most notably being 1957's 'Zero Hour'.

If you look back you will find that it was actually Airplane that gave birth to the Spoof genre and later on there was a flood of spoof movies. However none was as good and original as Airplane. The trio of ZAZ was either genius or too confident to cast actors who were not known for comedic roles. Whatever the trick was it worked for them. I particularly like the performance of Robert Stack.

No wonder the film is now often included in the list of classic comedy movies. I guess the screenplay of Airplane was one of the funniest screenplay ever written.

This scene was even copied in Indian comedy film Dhamaal

# 6. Animal House - Relive the best 7 years of your college education.

National Lampoon's Animal House [Blu-ray]
National Lampoon's Animal House [Blu-ray]

Food fights,Toga parties, music and comedy, there is everything in National Lampoon's Animal House that you would love to see in a comedy movie. Truly a 'Boys Gone Wild' film and every college-goer will love it.

It was Animal house that brought John Belushi into the class of comedians like Charlie Chaplin and Oliver Hardy. I became an instant fan of Belushi after watching the film. Don’t consider me too offensive but I will say that many college comedy films made lately are mere a copy of Animal house. Yeah few of them might be original but most of them took Animal house as their role model and got successful.

Who didn't liked the character Bluto (played by John Belushi) in Animal house? Here is a big speech for them.

# 5. Ferris Bueller's Day Off - While the rest of us were just thinking about it...Ferris borrowed a Ferrari and did it...all in a day.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Bueller...Bueller... Edition)
Ferris Bueller's Day Off (Bueller...Bueller... Edition)

John Hughes world-wide fame may have came from the success of 'Home Alone' but he has already proved his talent in 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off'. The movie has the attraction and magic that you can watch it again and again over time and you won't get bore. Ferris Bueller was scripted in less than a week and John was so sure about the success of movie that he spent $6 M on the Pre-mature script. The title character often reminds me of one of my friends who was as confident as Bueller was. I was always jealous that why everything worked out for him. After watching the film I came to know that it actually is the confidence of a person that makes the man. Also i tried a trick or two to skip my college.

PS- I thought Tom cruise was the only cute face in 80s but Matthew Broderick proved me wrong. I wonder why he didn't turned out into as big star as cruise.

My favorite character from the film was Edward rooney, Dean of Students (Played by Jeffery Jones). After getting a tough competition from Ferris' performance of 'Shout and Dance' in a road show, i would go by the end credits scene where Dean goes to home in School bus.

# 4. The Holy Grail - And now! At Last! Another film completely different from some of the other films which aren't quite the same as this one is.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition)
Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Special Edition)

Monty Python is perhaps the best comedy group.I got to know about the group when i first watched 'The Holy Grail'.I really loved the movie. There was so much to laugh at in this movie.Poetry Plus Music Plus Theme Plus Characters Plus Acting (and my favorite) One liners.I couldn't grab the whole movie at once so i watched it again and once again and once again and...(Okay,leave it). Those who have seen this flick agree that why i put it in here and those who haven't..Go and watch it,you're missing real fun.

Like many of Python's other projects in The Holy grail too every Python member played multiple roles. So don't get confused like me if you see them again and again on screen in different costumes.

Do you remember the Killer Bunny Scene from the film? It was so hilarious.

# 3. Life Of Brian - Just When You Thought You were Saved

Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition
Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition

Life of Brian is MP's another classic work.It is BIT better from "The Holy Grail". May be it was due to "Biggus D**kus" or maybe due to the lovely end song or may be (if i am not exaggerating) lord himself was there in movie enjoying every act and laughing at every intelligent one-liner. For those who are not aware, LOB follows the life of a young man named Brian on the same day as Jesus and is confused by several people as the real Messiah.

As I was not aware of MP so when I saw the film I was confused as if I was seeing one actor again and again in different roles. As the end credit rolled I found out that it was actually the very talented Terry Gilliam. I knew him as director only til then (Most notably for 12 Monkeys) but after watching this film I found out that how talented he is. I never knew he could act that funny. However I will be unbiased and say that I liked work of every python member. I loved the theme, plot and every act of python's. No modern day comedy could even come close to this legendary film (If only MP didn't came up with a movie).

I will feature the end song here. because i found it to be very inspirational. I liked it.

# 2. Some Like It Hot - The Movie Too Hot For Words

Some Like It Hot 50th Anniversary
Some Like It Hot 50th Anniversary

It was William Shakespeare who introduced the idea of mistaken identities in his plays and later on the idea was used in many films and stage plays. But for me ‘Some Like it Hot’ is one of the finest adaption of the idea that totally justifies it. I don't think i have to tell how great this movie is. Most Probably you already know and will remember how much you enjoyed this movie (and that was not just because of Marilyn Monroe).

Some like it hot was adapted from the story by Robert Thoeren and Michael Logan. Every punch line was hilarious and every situation was funny. When I saw the movie, the only name I was aware of was Marilyn Monroe. I am glad I saw the movie and came to about Billy Wilder and Jack Lemmon. It was due to this film that I watched several other movies of Jack Lemmon and Billy Wilder (I loved The Apartment too). Watching ‘Some like it hot’ takes you back to the age of classic comedies when humor was genuine, not like modern day movies' "toilet-humor".

Beware You Might fall in Love with Marilyn Monroe after watching this flick. I couldn't helped myself. Here is one of my favorite scene from the film (Marilyn monroe singing a song 'I wanna be loved by you')

# 1. Dr. Strangelove - The Hot-line Suspense Comedy

Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)
Dr. Strangelove, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb (Special Edition)

Stanley Kubrick is my favorite director. He worked in almost every genre and produced a master-piece.Strangelove is one such master-piece in comedy. The film was loosely inspired from Peter George's Cold War-thriller novel Red Alert, also known as Two Hours to Doom. The film satires on the cold war and "nuclear scare" between America and Soviet union at that time. Also the well known comic actor Peter Sellers stars in 3 roles :-

1. Group Captain Lionel Mandrake

2. President Merkin Muffley

3. Dr. Strangelove

Acting Plus Directing Plus Satires Is Equal to Lots of laughter and fun.The more i watch this movie the more i fall in love with it.Simply Brilliant.

My favorite scene from Dr. Strangelove ought to be the War Room scene. I don’t remember how many time I rewind the scene and watch it again and again til it became meaningless to me.

Charlie Chaplin was good but not great, the technology of his time limited him for greater ideas.

      • anonymous 5 years ago

Absolutely not. So sick of the old Chaplin/MarxBros/Somelikeithot school of thought when listing great comedies. No. Not relevant. Relevance died long ago. Come on people. Do not get me started on the wannabe hasn't-been Woody Allen.

Charlie Chaplin was indeed great, but as much as I like him, I'm not sure i could consider him the Best so far!

No, FUnny but not the funniest. Really prefer Robin Williams

      • nsixx99 5 years ago

I would say no for me, but that is mainly because i have not seen any of his films. i am more of a Hangover and Wedding Crashers kinda gal!

Nope, but I'm not sure who would be! He is very funny though. :D

      • Ronald Tucker 6 years ago from Louisville, Kentucky

My personal favorite would have to be Richard Pryor for his Stand-Up routines that chronicled his personal problems and his ability to joke about his misfortunes(many of his own making) and his performance in Silver Streak co-starring Gene Wilder is a classic in my opinion. Terrific lens that brought back a lot of fond memories from decades past.

      • Jools99 6 years ago

He is of his era; his films seem very dated now but he was a pioneer of comedy and I respect him for that.

      • MasterPsycho 6 years ago from Earth

Best is not such thing ever of something reflects only ONE's person opinion and not the world's. So it is totally wrong saying best ever of something...............Chaplin was one of the best at HIS time but i do not thing he would have a chance today..although i still laugh with his movies

      • Margaret Schindel 6 years ago from Massachusetts

No, but he's definitely among the Top Ten. ;)

      • Tony Payne 6 years ago from Southampton, UK

No, but he was very funny and very clever.

      • mich1908 6 years ago

He's great but it's just not my type of humour.

      • BlakeCzirr 6 years ago

I have to admit, I don't know a lot about Charlie Chaplin, although Robert Downey Jr. did a good job, as him, in the movie. But still, there's a lot of talent out there...some of it's really good.

Shout about your favorite comedy movie.
