Disney Planes Movie Flying into Theaters

Updated on April 26, 2013

Disney Planes Movie is Spin-Off from the Popular Cars Franchise

Disney's "Planes," a spin-off from the popular Disney/Pixar "Cars" movies, will be flying into theaters this summer. The animated movie will be released August 9, 2013.

"Planes" was originally envisioned as a direct-to-DVD/Bu-Ray release, but Disney decided to send it to the big screen instead. Like the "Cars" movies, "Planes" features vehicles that can move and talk. Dusty Crophopper, a small orange and white plane, is the star of the movie, which is sure to be a hit among kids and Disney fans.

Disney and Pixar, who brought us talking toys in Toy Story and talking cars in the Cars movies, are bringing more inanimate objects to life. This time, it's planes.

John Lasseter, chief creative officer at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios, said, "I know audiences are going to love taking off into the wild blue yonder with these daredevil characters, as they experience a whole new kind of animated adventure."

In the new Disney movie "Planes," Dusty Crophopper is a little plane who longs for a big adventure. He wants to participate in an around-the-world air race. But with a mere 680 1/2 HP and a fear or heights, the little orange and white plane is not exactly built for racing. But has that ever stopped the star of a Disney movie? Of course not!

Dusty gets some help from naval aviator Skipper (who helped Mater learn to fly in the Cars Toons short "Air Mater") and barely squeaks into a qualifying spot in the race. But the defending champ, Ripslinger, isn't happy. He doesn't like the little plane and plots to make him fail.

In the end, Dusty has to avert disaster and climb to new heights to fulfill his dream and inspire others to soar.

Look for Disney "Planes" this summer in a theater near you!

"Air Mater" is a Cars Toons short featuring Mater in one of his spectacular adventures. In this one, he learns to fly from a flight instructor named Skipper. Skipper, a WWII-era Vought F4U Corsair plane, is also a character in the "Planes" movie. In addition, Sparky is a pitty that appears in both "Air Mater" and "Planes." This is a great animated short to watch in anticipation of the movie Disney movie.
