Favorite Kids Christmas Movies

Updated on October 19, 2015

Best Christmas Movies for Kids

Ever since I was a kid, I loved watching Christmas movies. From Frosty the Snowman to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, every Christmas season, after Thanksgiving, we start watching Christmas movies, some old favorites and some new ones. These movies are typically within a three general themes: Miracles, Family, and Traditions.

Below is a list of Christmas movies for kids that our kids love and we know yours will too.

How the Grinch Stole Christmas

The classic Dr. Seuss book How the Grinch Stole Christmas was made into a video featuring Boris Karloff, and later into a movie starring Jim Carey. The video is my favorite.

A Christmas Carol Movie

Another great adaptation of a book is A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. The ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future teach us the true meaning of Christmas with the help of Tiny Tim. Many adaptations to this classic are around including the Muppets, but my favorite will always be the one with Reginald Owen and Gene Lockhart.

A Charlie Brown Christmas Special

Another great Christmas Special we would watch every year is A Charlie Brown Christmas Special as Charlie Brown and the Peanuts gang try to learn the meaning of Christmas.

Frosty the Snowman

Another classic by Rankin Bass that we watch every year is Frosty the Snowman with Jimmy Durante narrating.

A Modern Movie Classic

In recent years, Tom Hanks made one of our favorite movies of recent years, The Polar Express which was converted by the book of the same name. The Polar Express is a train that takes kids to the north pole, where Santa picks one of the kids to open the first gift of Christmas.

The Santa Clause

The Santa Clause was created by Disney and stars Tim Allen. Disney and Tim Allen made three Santa Clause movies. The premise of the Santa Clause is that each movie revolves around a certain rule or clause that Tim Allen suddenly finds himself trying to solve and balance his family life.

Elf - A Great Christmas Movie

Elf stars Will Ferrell and James Caan. Will Farrell is a human raised by the elves at Santa's workshop. Elf finds his way through the candy cane forest and into New York City in search for his real dad. Along the way, he saves Christmas by spreading the Christmas spirit throughout the city.

A Christmas Story

Here's a movie that they run for 24 hours straight on TNT or American Movies Classic each year. The phrases "I Triple Dog Dare You", and "You'll Shoot your Eye Out" are classics these day. Also, the Leg Lamp has become a classic in Christmas displays.

Stop Motion Christmas TV Specials

In the 1970's, I watched a series of Stop Motion Christmas Movies created by Rankin Bass Animated Entertainment which included Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, The Little Drummer Boy, Santa Claus in Comin to Town, and the Year Without a Santa Claus. My favorite characters and scenes came out of these movies including the Land of the Misfit Toys, Snow Miser, Heat Miser, and of course, Burgermeister Meisterburger.

These great christmas characters were played by some of the best actors and actresses of the time, including Mickey Rooney, Fred Astaire, Ethel Mermen, and Buddy Hacket.

More Christmas Movies and Videos

More classic Christmas movies include many forms including those from the Muppets, Disney, and Winnie the Pooh.
