I don't watch that main disaster films, but THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW was pretty good. I thought it did a good job of depicting how weather could easily be our downfall.
I really like "The Poseidon Adventure". It kinda started the whole star-studded disaster film genre and I still think it's one of the best. It's more character-oriented than some other disaster movies so, the deaths in the film, actually, have some weight to them. Plus, there are some really talented actors in it: Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Roddy McDowell . . . and Shelley Winters was even nominated for an Oscar (that doesn't happen often in a disaster movie)! On top of that, it has some really iconic visuals. I, also, think it's really cool that the movie, technically, deals with the fall-out of a disaster rather than just the initial "disastrous event".
