With Warner Brothers being up for sale, there's been rumors and speculation about the DC characters involving Superman, Batman and etc. For those of you who don't know, the Superman movie earlier this year was not only a reboot for the character, but it was set up to be a reboot for Warner Brothers new DC cinematic universe, which is aptly titled by James Gunn as the DCU. The DCU is unrelated to the previous DC cinematic universe that was titled by fans as the DCEU, or the Snyderverse as some would call it. The DCEU consists of all the DC films ranging from "Man of Steel" all the way "The Flash" movie...except for "The Suicide Squad" because Gunn claims that never happened in the DCEU, even though it came out before "The Flash" movie. The "Aquaman 2" film is debatable because Gunn has yet to confirm or deny if that's part of the DCU or DCEU. Confused? I don't blame you. Either way, it's rumored that if a financial group in Saudi Arabia buys Warner Brothers then the Snyderverse aka the DCEU may return.
Granted, some of you will wonder if this means the last Superman film was a flop...well that depends on what you want to believe. Varying sources claim it was a success at the box office while others claim it wasn't. Forbes even contradicted itself saying Gunns Superman film lost money only for them to go back on that claiming it did make money. Again, I'll let you all decide what to believe. What we do know is that most of the recent DC films, or superhero films in general, have mostly underperformed or outright flopped in theaters, with only a few making money in between these days.
Since "Black Adam", I think the last Superman movie was the first DC film to crack 500 million at least at the box office in recent years if I'm not mistaken. And, unlike man of Steel, this new Superman movie was highly praised by audiences and critics alike for the most part. Granted, man of Steel still made more money, but it didn't translate for much success down the road if anyone remembers. As much I loved "Man of Steel" unapologetically, I do feel bringing back the DCEU in any form would be a mistake.
Granted, there's issues I had with the new Superman film this year, as I do think it's overhyped. However, I didn't outright hate it, either. I just saw it as an average film that flanderized the characters, while over correcting all the complaints about "Man of Steel" that reduced Superman to feeling more like a supporting character in his own movie. That's just me. Either way, I think a lot of the issues I had with it could be corrected in a sequel. Of course, I said that about man of steel too but we all saw how that turned out. Do you think whoever buys Warner Brothers should restore the DCEU? Or continue the DCU? Or keep both?
