Just Who is Honey Boo Boo Child?

Who is Honey Boo Boo Child and why is she famous? Love her or hate her Honey Boo Boo is one hot topic. 'Who is Honey Boo Boo?' was one of the most asked questions of Google in 2012. I didn't know who Honey Boo Boo is so I thought I'd better get aquainted with just who Honey Boo Boo (or Honey Boo Boo Child, as she calls herself) is and why she's so darn popular.

Boy did I dig up some stuff!

I found out that Honey Boo Boo is Alana Thompson a child beauty queen, and that she stars in reality TV show Here Comes Honey Boo Boo along with her family, mother, 'Mama June', father 'Sugar Bear' and three sisters. But it doesn't end there. Mud is slung, babies are born, rumours are spread.

Love her or loath her? This is one little lady who generates a whole lot of opinions about herself and her family - some good, some bad and some just plain ugly. It's obvious that a load of folk love the little lady, but there's also a gang of guys out there just set to knock her down. So what is the truth about Honey Boo Boo Child? Beauty or Beast? I'd like to know what you think.

Honey Boo Boo Family in Car Accident

The New Year got off to a crashing start for the Thompson family

6th January 2014 the HBB family came out of a car crash in Milledgeville, Georgia shaken but sore according to Mama June Thompson. "Sugar Bear" Thompson (Alana's father) was driving at the time that a truck came through a red light into the the Thompson family car.

Along with Alana and her father and mother were her sisters, Lauryn (called Pumpkin) Shannon and Jessica (called Chubbs) Shannon were all in the car at the time of the accident. They were whisked off to hospital for a check-up and, as they were all relatively OK after the car crash, their first priority was 14 year old Pumpkin's birthday. Happy Birthday Pumpkin!

Honey Boo Boo Wedding Do - Mama June and Sugar Bear get wed - or did they??

Honey Boo Boo's Mom, June Shannon (33) married her partner Sugar Bear (Mike Thompson aged 41) on Sunday the 5th of May (International Scrapbooking Day!) in a budget bargain basement

Cinco de Mayo fiesta wedding shindig. It was no big deal money-wise: June's sister baked the cake and they splashed most of the cash on a BIG BBQ.

They got it together nine years ago after meeting in an on-line chat room - hey, that really does work? - and now here they are with dress and neon roses and cake and all the family - but for what? Did they really do the act or was it all just talk and show? June and her Sugar Bear are just not telling.

Centre stage in pink tull and looking good enough to eat was you know who - Honey Boo Boo. My, that child gets everywhere!

And Honey Boo Boo's Mama's advice to her girls? "Never settle for a man who doesn't treat you right." Mama June is one wise woman!

Wedding bells ring for Mama June

"If a man doesn't love everything about you, move on," says Mama June.

Don't hang around with a man that doesn't treat you right, says Mama June.

(I'm getting to like this lady more and more!)

Toddlers and Tiaras - Children in beauty pageants

Honey Boo Boo began her stage career as a child beauty queen on the TLC reality television show Toddlers & Tiaras is an American reality television series on TLC January 27, 2009. The series follows the families and children who take part in child beauty pageants.

Contraversial - controversy is the lifeblood of reality TV - and causing a huge stir when young girls are trained to act out adult rolls. One child became the centre of a custody fight in August 2012 where psychologists were dragged into the whole performance. Apparently one mother on the show padded out her daughter's chest to look like Dolly Parton. It has even been called a show for paedophiles.

About Honey Boo Boo Child and her Family

Where did they find Honey Boo Boo? Honey BooBoo is from McIntyre, Georgia

Honey Boo Boo was born Alana Thompson in McIntyre, Georgia on the 28th .August 2005 and she shot to fame in TLC's Toddlers & Tiaras show about beauty queens.

June Shannon became a mother at the age of 15.

On July 26, Honey Boo Boo's 18-year-old sister Chickadee gave birth to a baby girl named Kaitlyn, who happened to be born with two thumbs on her right hand

Amazingly hard to find biographical information about the family. Nobody seems to be very concerned with the reality of this reality-show star - I'll continue the search and post later!

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

What's 'Here Comes Honey Boo Boo' all about?

Famous for farting? Is this how June Shannon became a star?

Is the show really 'rednexploitation'? Is it aimed at a snobby audience ready to laugh at the poor? There are actually subtitles - is this because there's doubt that the audience will understand this 'breed' of humanity?

Food and food issues pop up all over. Clearly June has a big weight problem and the rest of the family, including Alana, seem to be going the same way. Is the weight issue class-related? Look at all the hullabaloo about the Honey Boo Boo Go-Go juice. Is this all part of appalling mothering? What about the supposed lack of parenting skills? Is this really a disfunctional family? There are many more questions to pose about Honey Boo Boo et al.

According to Christina Stiehl on Hollywood Life (see link below) both of Alana Thompson's parents have criminal records and both have spent time in gaol / jail. It turns out that each time it was for debt and burglary. Natural consequences of poverty?

There are also constant accusations of child abuse. Are they true or false?

When Alana's 18-year-old sister Anna gave birth to baby Kaitlyn there was yet more to talk about. What about Honey Boo Boo's niece being born with three thumbs and then being given caffein-loaded Mountain Dew Code Red to drink? Truth or fiction?

I think the family is doing a good job of hauling themselves out of the misery of poverty!

Moves to Ban Child Beauty Contests

France to ban beauty pageants for children

Unease about the exploitation and sexualization of young girls came to a head in France when Vogue featured 10-year-old French model Thylane Loubry Blondeau dressed in glamorous adult clothing.

Calls for this to be outlawed bore fruit when the French Senate voted in September 2013 to ban beauty pageants for all children under the age of sixteen. Typically they wield a huge stick and threaten anyone entering a child or running beauty contests prison sentences of up to two years in prison and fines up to 30,000 euros (some reports say $40,000). Other countries may follow suit.

I don't particularly have any opinion of the child or the family, just think this is the crappiest of crappy tv!!!

I had to watch a video a few weeks ago to see what Honey Boo Boo was, since I kept hearing about it. I thought maybe it was a stripper. A little girl?! These shows try to be as outrageous as possible, but they are really a sad commentary on American life. Can't we find something uplifting to watch? Maybe these days especially we all need some inspiration. I guess we can watch Honey Boo Boo and think, "Well, I'm not that bad, so I guess I am okay." That's pretty depressing.

Thanks for the info. I wondered about all the Honey BooBoo hoopla... and now I know as much as I care to. I like your "public service announcement" approach to the whole thing.

@ismeedee: There seem to be so many exploitative programmes like that. I wonder how low they'll stoop. I feel sorry for the family - but envious of the cash!

@Frischy: Thanks so much Frischy, for leaving these comments. I suppose the problem is the audience rather than the programmers. I began looking into this simply because I seemed to be the only person who didn't know who Honey Boo Boo was, but now I realise that it touches on so many of the big issues of our age - feminism, poverty, media, psychology, inequality, food and the food industry ..... I could go on.

First time I hear about it- it's a bit sad. Why would people need a reality TV show about an ordinary family and make a parody out of it?

    • profile image

I had to click the off button on the first video - I have 3 daughters but no way would I put them through anything like this. This is huge child exploitation, that can only damage the child.

@anonymous: I agree aj. I also think the whole thing is problematic for women in general. what are we doing to our girls? Still, being poor in America can't be much fun either. Being financially secure CAN buy you health care, good housing, education and can release you from money worries and debt. some debate huh?

These folks found a gig that works and they are playing it to the hilt...and making it big time, so good for them for now, even though I don't see the attraction at all. I hope she grows up to be a happy and fulfilled person with good memories and isn't the mess that so many child celebrities become. It's a head scratcher for me! I guess I wonder about the cost of what may be considered success and it makes me a little sad.

I do wonder which would be worse - having to perform like they do or live a life of relentless grinding poverty. At least they can pay to get their eyes fixed to see or hips replaced to walk. Well, it's good that the money they are making goes into a trust fund for each of the kid, but it isn't something I would want to watch. I'm not keen on families living out their lives for the tv audience. At least I now know a little more about this child.
