How to Play Away In A Manger - A First Carol?

Here is Away In A Manger free music to help you play Away in a Manger. Do you love to hear children singing Away in a Manger in the Nativity Play? I know I do! Away In A Manger is a beautiful Christmas Carol for children to sing. How many of us learned to sing Away In A Manger for our very first school Nativity Play? How many schools these days even HAVE a Nativity Play? Not enough, is my guess - we are certainly happy to take the excuse for giving gifts and feasting, but many are less happy being reminded of the true Christmas message.

Personally, I think that is wrong and in sharing how to play Christmas songs I am hopefully doing my little bit to make sure that Jesus is not forgotten completely as the whole world - Christian and Non-Christian alike - celebrate the birthday of this Prince of Peace.... Read on for the melody and chords of this lovely traditional carol and a few pretty things to remind us of the Nativity itself!

Clicking below will take you to my Lulu page where you can see my carol book for solo guitar.

Christmas - A Time For All To Celebrate? - Unless Your Belief Is Christian?

Some schools do not allow the traditional Christmas Nativity Play any more because they have non-Christian students. Is that right?

Do you think schools have become too secular at Christmas?

Christmas is a time when all should celebrate family - what does Jesus have to do with that?

Christmas is a time when all people can rejoice - but knowing about the Nativity should be central.

I'm not a particularly religious person, but I am sad that so much of the real meaning of Christmas has been taken out of the schools. When my kids were little, their school had a Christmas carol sing. Now it's a holiday sing, but with all secular music. I miss the Christmas carols.

I think if people find something offensive they can just not attend, and request that their children not attend. I'd rather see Nativity Plays performed and activities by all different faiths, and atheists too if they like, also available for all to enjoy. We can all learn about what Christmas, and other holidays, means to all people.

As a teacher I have helped with the music for Nativity Plays. Children and parents always love them. I have seen children of other beliefs - Muslim and Hindu come to mind - happily taking part in all Christmas activities, icluding the Nativity Play. For me, abandoning the traditional Christmas story is simply PC gone mad!

      Away In A Manger Lyrics

Here are the words of Away In A Manger

      Away in a manger,

      No crib for a bed

      The little Lord Jesus

      Laid down His sweet head

The stars in the bright sky

      Looked down where He lay

      The little Lord Jesus

      Asleep on the hay

      The cattle are lowing

      The Baby awakes

      But little Lord Jesus

      No crying He makes

      I love Thee, Lord Jesus

      Look down from the sky

      And stay by my side,

      Until morning is nigh.

      Be near me, Lord Jesus,

      I ask Thee to stay

      Close by me forever

      And love me I pray

      Bless all the dear children

      In Thy tender care

      And fit us for heaven

      To live with Thee there

Well I don't remember actually being in a Nativity Play, but I do think they're wonderful to watch. And yes, I do remember Away in a Manger as one of the first Christmas carols I learned!

I've never been in a Nativity Play, but I remember singing "Away in a Manger". I know and like two different tunes to it.

A slightly less common Christmas song than the staples but still a great song to learn. Great lens.
