Oscar-Nominated Jennifer Lawrence Gets The Katniss Everdeen, Hunger Games Role

Updated on July 29, 2011

The hunt for a leading lady to star in "The Hunger Games" is over.

Considering I have read all three books twice and have made close to a dozen friends read them this is quite a big deal for me.

It's undoubtedly true! After months of guesswork and waiting, the 20-year-old has been chosen for the lead role. Lionsgate confirmed that Jennifer Lawrence stars as the heroine in the film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ trilogy “The Hunger Games”.

The Oscar-nominated "Winter's Bone" star beat out more than 30 actresses, including Hailee Steinfeld and Chloe Moretz, for the coveted role of District 12 tribute Katniss Everdeen.

The actress was said to be excited to play the role of a girl who is sent on a fight-to-death survival contest with other tributes in a TV reality show to save her community.

In addition, it was also confirmed that "Weeds" star Hunter Parrish is in to play the male lead of Peeta Mellark. When E! Online asked Parrish, 23, who he would want as his heroine, the actor mentioned Lawrence first.

Good for Parrish since Lawrence is in for the role. So, I guess this is considered a good circumstance (I wish!) and hope I’ll be looking for a good amount of chemistry on-screen.

I wish them both the best of luck. I am not a casting director so can't pretend to know what they look for in casting this.

The Dismay: A Possible Disaster Movie?

A few people, if not many, agrees that Jennifer Lawrence should be the one casted as the lead for this highly-anticipated movie. They commented to watch Winter's Bone so I will know the reason why she was picked.

They also added that Jennifer is an awesome choice! Also, she already played a “younger than her age role” in Winter's Bone. More conviction? Remember how there was a lot of dispute when Robert Pattinson was cast as Edward in Twilight, and look how that turned out.

But I beg to disagree. Personally, Hailee Steinfeld would've been a much better choice. It seems that Jennifer is way too old for this role since the heroine is a 16-17 year old girl. By the time that film wraps up, Jennifer will be in her mid-20s. Uh-oh. Other than that, I think Hailee will be able to grasp the vulnerability, complexity and depth of Katniss Everedeen’s character. Oh well, regardless of the casting, I’m still excited about this movie. I hope it turns out really good.

I'll throw in a photo below of my choice Hailee Steinfield as well as a picture of Hunter Parrish who will play Peeta Mellark. I think this is a decent choice.

- Reviewing this later, I am actually getting warmed up to Jennifer Lawrence....

Do You Think Jennifer Lawrence Is A Good Fit For The Katniss Everdeen Role?

I get tired of hearing everyone say she is good for the role of Katniss because she is "pretty". I am sorry but she is just an average Jane doe, I do not see anything special in this girl in winters bone she played a hick which may come easy to her being from KY and all. Katniss is a lot younger than her and Jennifer is a big breasted woman not a little girl like Katniss, she is also on the curvier side as Katniss Is not she is thin. I would have much rather seen Haylee from True Grit play the part she fits Katniss PERFECT!!! Jennifer Lawrence is not all she is cracked up to be, she is sappose to be portraying herself in a more graceful light playing a 16/17 year old majority of her fans are going to be young girls and she is taking riskay photos with GQ and looks more on the trampy side! I am dissapointed and think her photos are tasteless! I would deff not let my 14 year old daughter become a fan of hers she is not a good role model for young ladies.

Ya, from the books I was confused with the casting, but I saw some photos from the shoot and she looks great. Apparently, Hollywood people think some of these things through so we wait and see.

I haven't read the books so I don't know if JL is the best person for the role, however, she certainly seems to have screen presence.

Thanks for all of the many comments. Sorry for lagging for awhile on my hubpages activity. Can't wait for the Hunger Games movie. If anyone hasn't read those books, they are certainly of the caliber of Harry Potter and better, in my opinion, than the twilight series which I will in fact admit that I loved.

She's a beautiful woman, and I think Hollywood has a certain knack for working their magic and making adult actors look the part. Ralph Macchio could be said to have been interesting in that while he was an adult he played a kid in "Karate Kid," and then later went on to play an older man in another movie where he aged quickly...though the name of that one eludes me suddenly.

I saw Winters Bone and was transfixed by the excellent storyline and equally excellent acting. This is one of the best films that I have seen in a long time.

I had not seen this young woman before but I was very impressed by her realistic portrayal of the young woman in this film.

I will be watching out for 'The Hunger Games' to see how she turns out in this role, thanks for the heads up :)

@ Ingenira: Oh yes, we'll see if it turns out well. This movie has high expectations synonymous to that of the Twilight phenomenon. Thus, many are anticipating it better turn out to be really good.

@ Dim: I'm glad you enjoyed it. Hope you'll read the book and/or see the movie. It's worth it. Thanks for dropping by.

@Mulberry: Seconded. Hope it matches up since the book is so good and well-liked.

Now when I see the film I'll have more of an opinion about things. If I haven't read a book, I'm often less judgemental about the movie and the actors/actresses in it. Once I've read the book though, I've already seen the movie in my the real movie better match up or I'm dissatisfied.

Thank you Five One Cows. Glad you like it.

Hi Nell Rose! Oh yes, I hope they get right with those characters too. Since these lead roles may make or break the essence of the book.

Hi, I agree with you that if the person chosen for a film is 'wrong' it can totally spoil the film. I am waiting to see who they will put in the roles of Jamie and Clair of Diana gabaldons great books, they had better get it right! lol
