Mads Mikkelsen Movies

As a world known actor Mads Mikkelsen has only just started to make his impact in Holywood, but in Denmark he has been famous since he played the lowlife, but lovable Tonny in the Danish kult movie Pusher. His talent has brought him far though and Mads Mikkelsen has recently started appearing in bigger and bigger Holywood productions. Most recently he got to play alongside Orlandy Bloom and Logan Lerman in the Three Musketeers, however Mads Mikkelsen has done a lot of other films before that and he is currently working on some exciting movies as well.

Mads Mikkelsens latest movie - Rochefort in The Three Musketeers

The Three Musketeers (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]
The Three Musketeers (Special Edition) [Blu-ray]

Mads Mikkelsen is the evil villain Rochefort and he is joined in the Villain boat by high profile names like Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich and Cristoph Waltz. They are set against the three Musketeers Athos (Matthew MacFadyen), Porthos (Ray Stevenson) and Aramis (Luke Evans), who are joined by D'Artagnan (Logan Lerman).

The special effects and the costumes are extraordinary and the Three Musketeers are definitely worth checking out just for that. Mads Mikkelsen doesn't get as much stage time as he deserves, however he is brilliant in the villain role and you can't help but love him for how much you hate him!

Casino Royale - Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre

Most male actors has probably dreamed about getting to play James Bond just for one movie. I am pretty sure Mads Mikkelsen was more than thrilled to get offered the role as the Bond Villain Le Chiffre.

He plays the part superbly and he gets to act alongside Daniel Craig, whom many has agreed was the perfect choice for the new Bond.

Casino Royale has action, romance and clever, catchy dialogue. Oh and it has Mads Mikkelsen!

Clash of the Titan

Clash of the Titans [Blu-ray]

This is a remake of a 1981 film which reached kult status. Doing remakes like this is often a bit risky as you have to get it just right in order for the fans to still love it and to lure in a new crowd as well. Clash of the Titan is a good fantasy action movie, however the acting never amazes, except for the parts where Mads Mikkelsen in the role as Draco, enters the screen. He manages to give the character depth and make him believable. The film is well worth a viewing just for the action and the special effects.

Valhalla Rising starring Mads Mikkelsen - Bloddy, Brutal, Brilliant.

Valhalla Rising
Valhalla Rising

Valhalla Rising is a master piece of a movie, however it is not everyones cup of tea or should I say horn of mjoed. The film is about the mute viking warrior One-Eye played by Mads Mikkelsen. We follow his struggle for survival, first when he escapes captivity by slaughtering everyone and later as he joins up with a group of Crusaders on the way to the Holy Land. The story can be hard to grasp and follow, however it is the acting and the visuals that really makes this movie stand out. Mads Mikkelsen barely changes his facial expression throughout the movie and his character is mute, yet he still manages to portray a deeply disturbing character.

Pusher - The debut of Mads Mikkelsen

Pusher
Pusher

Pusher is a very troubling movie to watch. It is a depiction of the rough environment of street criminals. Mads Mikkelsen plays Tonny, the sidekick and friend of a drug dealer called Frank. They are owing money to the the Bosnian mobster Milo and in an attempt to get the debt covered, they attempt a risky deal. The deal of course goes wrong and suddenly the debt to Milo has multiplied.

From here it just goes down hill for Frank and Tonny. It is a harsh movie, however it is sprinkled with a good deal of dark humour which makes it a movie where you are alternating between holding your hands on your stomach and in front of your eyes.

This movie was the real starting point for Mads Mikkelsens carreer.

Flame and Citron - Based on a true story, reinacted by Mads Mikkelsen

This film is based on historical events from World War II. Mads Mikkelsen and Thure Lindhardt portrays two of the most famous members of the Danish resistance movement which was active during the occupation of Denmark during World War II.

If you like historical movies I can only recommend this one, the scenography is great and the acting is amazing.

Mads Mikkelsen and Dogme Films

The Dogme movement was started in 1995 by Lars Von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg. The idea behind the rule set was to make the film directors focus more on story telling and acting rather than special effects. Many danish actors of that period of time in danish film have acted in dogme movies and in my opinion it has made them very strong in their acting abilities. Mads Mikkelsen was one of those actors, he starred in 1995 dogme movie Open Hearts. He has brought the focus on strong acting into all of the movies he has done since making him one of those rare actors who can add meaning to a fictional character just with the way he plays it without relying on anything but himself(and in some cases his co-stars).

Open Hearts - Mads Mikkelsen in Dogme Movie

Open Hearts (Original Danish Version With English Subtitles)
Open Hearts (Original Danish Version With English Subtitles)

Open Hearts will make you cry, it will also make you smile and then it will make you feel guilty about smiling. It is a story about love and loss, about tragedy and new hope. And about how new hope for you can mean tragedy for someone else. It is a movie that makes you think about love and what a random thing it is. Watch it, love it, but keep tissues close at hand.

@SusannaDuffy: Yes, Unit One is pretty awesome. Too bad it hasn't been launched to many countries. Glad I could give you some inspiration! :)

I first saw Mads on television here in Australia - a delightful TV series called Unit One (Rejseholdet) and was really impressed by his screen presence. Since then I keep an eye out for his films and now I know a lot more of them thanks to you
