Most Anticipated Movies of 2013 - The Best Upcoming Movies of 2013
There are so many new upcoming movies 2013 that it can be difficult to choose which movie to go and pay your hard earned cash to watch. It can be even more difficult to think which movies you want to see with friends. Of course, the last thing you want to go and watch is a flop and be the lame one that suggested you all go see it!
You might be safer picking a movie that almost everyone will have heard of, as it's among the most anticipated movies of 2013. If you do this, then no-one can blame you if it doesn't perform as well as you thought, as it means everyone was wrong! Also if you choose what is likely to be one of the most popular movies of 2013, there's less likely to be that awkward silence at the end of the movie where you're wondering how to say what you thought about the movie or what it was even about?
If you read below you will find my list of the most anticipated movies of 2013 and why they are likely to deliver for cinema audiences around the world.
If you are desperate to watch something now on DVD or from Amazon instant player etc then please check out the best movies of 2012.
Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters
Release Date: January 25th 2013
Genre: Action/Fantasy
Directed By: Tommy Wirkola
Starring: Gemma Arterton, Famke Janssen, Jeremy Renner and Peter Stormare
Synopsis: So imagine that you are alone in the woods with only your sibling and you see a house made of candy. You both approach the house and are almost killed by a witch. What do you dedicate the rest of your life to? Why killing witches and strange things that go bump in the night of course!
Hansel and Gretel did just that after the fairytale ending. Except now, they are all grown up and travel the land with crossbows and specially crafted guns, taking witches out all across the land. Only in their most recent town the rules of the game have changed. They aren't sure what it is that they are hunting and Gretel falls into a trap. Hansel must save her and the other missing children before it is too late.
There are a number of funny parts in this movie and it actually reminded me a lot of Van Helsing. There are some really cool outfits with a lot of skin tight leather and fitted jackets. For movie fans that like action there's a lot of guns and weapons in Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters. However, this movie isn't that scary so doesn't fit into the horror section. This movie is one of my favorite new upcoming movies 2013 as it's a book to movie adaptation.
The Host
Release Date: March 29th 2013
Genre: Science-Fiction/Romance
Directed By: Andrew Niccol
Starring: Saoirse Ronan, Diane Kruger, William Hurt and Max Irons
Synopsis: This is a movie adaptation of the Host written by the same author of the Twilight series, Stephenie Meyer. This series is completely seperate from Twilight and involves a very different world.
The movie is set to closely follow the book and is about an alien force that has invaded the Earth. However, they haven't come with guns and other weapons. Well not really. They have come to create peace and tranquility. The only down side is they take over your body to do so.
An alien parasite inserts itself in the body and takes over the bodies functions and facilities. The majority of humans have already become these aliens puppets except for a small handful in hiding.
When Melanie Stryder is invaded by an alien parasite, she fights back. She begins to gain more and more influence on the invader and starts to change how the alien parasite thinks about humans and the world they have taken over.
This leads her to fall in love with a free human and sets her against her own race.
If Stephenie Meyer's Twilight fans flock to see her latest book to movie project, then this could eaily become one the most popular movies of 2013.
Star Trek Into Darkness
Release Date: May 17th 2013
Genre: Science Fiction/Action
Directed By: JJ Abrams
Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Zoe Saldana, Leonard Nimoy
Synopsis: How many Star Trek or Trekkie fans are there around the world? How many of them have learnt to speak Klingon?
Well you'll be happy to know you don't need to be a Trekkie fan to get into Star Trek Into Darkness. However, if you are then you're likely to already know the story that's coming up in the first quarter of 2013.
Superman - Man of Steel
Release Date: June 14th 2013
Genre: Superhero/Action/Science-Fiction
Directed By: Zack Snyder
Starring: Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Russell Crowe and Diane Lane
Synopsis: A reboot of the classic Superman story with the new Superman played by Henry Cavill.
Most of the back story is the same, but with more star power in the cast this time around. Examples of this include Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe as Clark Kent's fathers and Diane Lane as Martha Kent.
On top of that, there's a modern twist to the classic Superhero movie in the form of the internal struggle faced by Clark Kent. He's one of a kind and will eventually have to face up to his abilities if he's to save the ones he loves the most.
Hopefully, Henry Cavil can bring the shine back to Superman in Superman - Man of Steel. The last few Superman films have been disappointing. However, this is touted to be one of the best Superhero movies 2013.
This is also one of the most anticipated movies of 2013 as everyone is looking forward to Superman returning to his days of glory, which hasn't really happened since Christopher Reeves last played the character.
Monsters University
Release Date: June 21st 2013
Genre: Animation/Comedy/Family
Directed By: Dan Scanlon
Starring: John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Kelsey Grammer and Jennifer Tilly.
Synopsis: Monsters University is one of the best upcoming movies 2013. Fans of Monsters Inc have waited patiently for another Monsters film and this time it's going to be in 3D! These two cute and cuddly guys are two of our most favorite characters of all time. Now audiences will find out how they chose their life path, by finding out what they were like before they became Scarers.
If you're looking for the best animated movies 2013, then look no further!
Monsters University takes us back to when Mike and Sully were in their younger years and attended University, so they could have careers as Scarers. It turns out they weren't close friends to begin with and actually played pranks on each other instead. Eventually they became the friends we know them to be and the rest as they say is history.
I think this will be a great movie to watch at the cinema not only for kids but for all the family. I am anticipating a lot of gags that only adults will get, while the kids enjoy the storyline and animations. I think this will be one of the biggest grossing new kids movies 2013.
Will Monsters University beat the best kids movies of 2012?
The Lone Ranger
Release Date: July 3rd 2013
Genre: Adventure/Action/Western
Directed By: Gore Verbinski
Starring: Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Armie Hammer and Leon Rippy
Synopsis: What happens when a cowboy and a native American Indian have to work together? Yeah I know it sounds like a really corny joke, but this is the premise behind the Lone Ranger.
In the Lone Ranger, we'll see how Tonto and the Lone Ranger, known as John Reid, have to work together to bring the law to the wild wild west.
The tale is mostly told in Tonto's lilting script and supposedly native American accent while trying to speak English. Most people will probably liken this character to Captain Jack Sparrow, from Pirates of the Carribean, as Johnny Depp gives Tonto a similar spin.
This is really is a tale of two cultures that have very little in common try and come together in order to find peace. Although it is funny that they are so different yet they both wear masks, Tonto's is painted on and the Lone Ranger dons a mask to fight crime.
Some viewers may be offended by Johnny Depp's impersonation of an American Indian, but the only defense I can say is it is supposed to be a movie. He brings his usual quirkiness to the role. And of course, no Johnny Depp movie is complete without Helena Bonham Carter.
300: Rise of an Empire
Release Date: August 2nd 2013
Genre: Action/Fantasy
Directed By: Zack Snyder
Starring: Eva Green, Rodrigo Santoro, Sullivan Stapleton, Jack O'Connell and Andrew Tiernan
Synopsis: After the success of 300 back in 2006, starring Gerald Butler, it should come as no surprise that there will be another movie in the series. Fans have eagerly been awaiting the details of what the next film will actually be and details are beginning to leak out.
There has been a lot of back and forward for 300: Rise of an Empire. It has already been through a number of name changes and it's been decided that it will be a prequel to 300. So don't expect to see Gerald Butler as it's set before his time.
So far we know that it will be about the Persians and the mortal god Xeres again. However, this time it will be the Greek general, Themistocles who will have to face Xerves and his army.
Movie goers should expect more of the same kind of scenes from 300, as it's the same director.
Mortal Instruments - City of Bones
Release Date: August 23rd 2013
Genre: Action/Adventure/Fantasy
Directed By: Scott Stewart
Starring: Lily Collins
Synopsis: If you were wondering what you were going to do to get over your obsession with Twilight, well we have the answer. Get addicted to the next installment of supernatural beings by watching Mortal Instruments later in 2013.
For those that have never read or heard of the books by Cassandra Clare then you have really missed out. However, you are just in time to read the book series before the new movie airs.
This book series has a lot in common with Twilight, but it has even more things that go bump in the night. This movie is anticipated to follow the book fairly closely and not only involves vampires and werewolves, it also includes angels, fairy creatures and of course normal people called mundanes. On top of that there are Shadowhunters, which are considered to be half angel half human, and they hunt demons and other halfings such as warlocks and witches that don't obey the rules.
There's also the love triangle that's needed in every teen angst movie and the cast are all good looking people of course.
This could easily become a huge box office hit and if it does there's plenty of follow up films that could come off the back-end. So far there are 3 books in the series on which the movie creators could draw upon.
Cassandra Clay also has plans to go back to the same world that Mortal instruments is set in and project the stoy five years into the future and bring new characters to life.
If this does well at the box office and becomes one of the highest grossing movies of the year, then it could easily become the next series that everyone will be lining up to watch over the coming years.
I have read the Mortla Instruments books and the Twilight books. I think you loved the Twilight books and series of movies, then you'll absolutely love the Mortal Instruments books series too!
The Hunger Games - Catching Fire
Release Date: November 21st 2013
Genre: Science Fiction/Drama/Action
Directed By: Gary Ross
Starring: Woody Harrelson, Elnny Kravitz, Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson
Synopsis: Katniss and Peta thought they were safe after surviving their Hunger Game. However, that's far from the truth. This year is a special Hunger Games as it's the 75th Anniversary of the games. This year, previous winners from each District will be chosen to return to the Arena and compete again to win.
Katniss has no choice but to go back to the Capitol and compete again as she is the only female from District 12 to ever win a Hunger Games. The male competitor joining her should be Hamish, but Peta steps up since Hamish already knows the Sponsors.
Expect to meet previous winners from the other Hunger Games in the Arena and find out why the outcome of the Games is so important, after Katniss's defiance of the rules last year. How will Katniss save Peta this time? Or will it be Peta's turn to save Katniss?
The first Hunger Games was considered to be a hit. We'll have to cross our fingers and hope that this upcoming movie of 2013 is able to continue to hit the mark. I'm really excited to see it and hope it's not too complicated for audiences with the introduction of so many new characters.
The Hobbit 2 - The Desolation of Smaug
Release Date: December 13th 2013
Genre: Adventure/Fantasy
Directed By: Peter Jackson
Starring: Martin Freeman, Iain McKellen, Andy Serkis
Synopsis: Peter Jackson decided early on to split the Hobbit into two and earn double at the box office. However, it looks like the original Hobbit book will now be split into three and it looks like Jackson has plans to clean up at the box office, three times in a row.
I guess it's easier to take something that is highly anticipated and milk it for all it's worth. It's gotta be easier than trying to find a decent new project, new cast, new locations and a new audience. I'm hoping that viewers don't feel short changed or cheated because part way through the third Lord of the Rings I was thinking they should just on with it.
For those that have read the book, you'll know what the stories about. The Hobbit is about what happened before the Lord of the Rings. It's about Frodo's adoptive father Bilbo and how he went on a journey with the Dwarves. Along the way he met the Elves and he also met Gollum. This is really a tale of how the ring came to be in the Shire, which sets off the events of the Lord of the Rings.
No doubt Peter Jackson is hopeful that this will become one of the the most popular movies of 2013 if not one of the most popular movies of all time. However, only time will tell.
