"Outlaw Country" 2010 Drama Dumped By FX, Pilot Finally Airs in August 2012

This lens is devoted to all things "Outlaw Country" -- the drama originally planned as a television series on the FX network. The "Outlaw Country" lens will cover some of my first-hand experiences during the shooting of the pilot for the show in Nashville, Tennessee, in October 2010, as well as cover cast members Mary Steenburgen, Haley Bennett, John Hawkes and Luke Grimes. The lens will also feature show updates and news.

The FX Network program "Outlaw Country" has been described as a modern drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime. According to the IMDB, "Outlaw Country" is a "crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of southern organized crime and Nashville royalty where music, love, hope and tragedy collide." Steenburgen and Bennett play mother and daughter country music singers.

"Outlaw Country" was shot as a pilot in 2010 starring Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. The pilot movie underwent reshoots in April of 2011. Then in November 2011 it was announced that FX had officially passed on the crime thriller/family drama exploring organized crime and Nashville "royalty." The pilot was finally aired on FX as a TV movie on August 23, 2012.

"Outlaw Country" Pilot Filmed in Nashville

In October of 2010, the pilot for the new FX drama "Outlaw Country" was filmed in various locations across Middle Tennessee including locations in several Tennessee counties around Nashville. Some scenes were shot at the Dickson County Fairgrounds with Mary Steenbergen, Hayley Bennett, Luke Grimes and John-Paul Howard. Other scenes were shot at Cumberland Furnace, also in Dickson County.

According to the Nashville Scene, a partial list of the Nashville talent used on the production would include Jim O'Rear, Reegus Flenory, Jason Allen, Jessejames Locorriere, assistant camera Tracy Facelli, music supervisor Shooter Jennings, sound mixer Glen Trew and set PA Eric Williams.

Outlaw Country joins other recent films with country music roots shot in Nashville including "Pure Country 2: The Gift" and "Country Strong."

Mary Steenburgen

Mary Steenburgen was born February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas. She plays plays country singer Anastasia Lee in "Outlaw Country."

Mary Steenburgen was the first cast member signed to the new FX drama, "Outlaw Country." While Steenburgen is reported to sing in the role, she was definitely lip synching in the concert scene shot at the Dickson County Fairgrounds in Nashville. However, she sang in the movie "The Butcher's Wife," also starring Demi Moore and Jeff Daniels, so she may really do some of her own singing in "Outlaw Country."

Speaking of singing, Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon Jennings, is also reportedly an executive consultant and music supervisor for the FX series.

Steenburgen is co-starring in another country music-themed movie -- the upcoming indie film 'Dirty Girl,' with Juno Temple, Milla Jovovich and William H. Macy. Country stars Dwight Yoakum and Tim McGraw ("Country Strong") are also in the film, which is about a girl who runs away from her Oklahoma home in 1987, according to Variety. "Dirty Girl" premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 12, 2010.

"Country Strong" is not Steenburgen's only Southern-themed pilot in 2010. She shot another pilot earlier this year for the sitcom "Southern Discomfort" with Don Johnson and Sophia Bush.

Steenburgen is also known for her roles in "Back to the Future III," "Melvin and Howard," "One Magic Christmas," "Elf," and many other movies.

Watching the commercial with your red faced tattooed man was quite repulsive. I doubt you could find another more unpleasant individual to promote your show. I will not watch the show in worry of see such a hellish figure again. I have no doubt the plot of the show is much of the same.

I can't believe they canned it! I was channel switching and found it just starting.....nothing much good on TV anymore so watched it! It was awesome, couldn't leave the room for breaks until commercials. In the world of "TV land", you don't come across many shows worth watching anymore and was looking for it to become a series. Somebody needs their head examined!

I watched the pilot last night and wish FX would pick up this show. "Outlaw Country" was a great concept. It only needed a little more promotion. It's as good as a lot of other shows, better than a bunch of other shows, and let's not forget that "Seinfeld" was almost not picked up!?!

@anonymous: I am not sure why they didn't pick it up, but I think I remember reading somewhere FX thought it was too similar to some of its other programming, and I believe Justified was mentioned as one of the similar existing shows. Here is a petition: http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/outlaw-country/

@KathrynDarden: the cast was what made it

they wwoudlhave picked up a lot of the jenniferlawrence fans because of john hawkes

i kept thinking the girl was the same as the one from Revenge

the chemistry between grimes and that girl was electric but having the best actor john hawkes in it was unbelievable

      I LOVED THIS SHOW

I WAS SO DISAPPOINTED when it ended

i wasna't aware and just happened upon it

Why didn't FX PICK IT UP ..thought much better than justified which i like. Where can we start a petition?!

I loved Outlaw Country and found it to be quite entertaining, and left us hangin on for more. It is a shame that F/X wants to pass up on this series, Luke Grimes and the cast kept us on the edge of our seats wanting more and left too much unanswered with the last very minutes...Please reconsider and make Outlaw Country a series...we want more and I know I'm no alone.

@anonymous: I wish they would pick it up, because it was filmed where eI live and I was an extra in it, and it would be nice to get the occasional casting call, but I think too much time has passed for them to be able to pick up where they left off. Maybe they could create a storyline with some returning cast members (whoever was available) and perhaps replace someone who might be locked into something else, but I suspect they would almost have to start over with a new cast.
