"Outlaw Country" 2010 Drama Dumped By FX, Pilot Finally Airs in August 2012

This lens is devoted to all things "Outlaw Country" -- the drama originally planned as a television series on the FX network. The "Outlaw Country" lens will cover some of my first-hand experiences during the shooting of the pilot for the show in Nashville, Tennessee, in October 2010, as well as cover cast members Mary Steenburgen, Haley Bennett, John Hawkes and Luke Grimes. The lens will also feature show updates and news.

The FX Network program "Outlaw Country" has been described as a modern drama set against the backdrop of Southern organized crime. According to the IMDB, "Outlaw Country" is a "crime thriller/family drama set against the backdrop of southern organized crime and Nashville royalty where music, love, hope and tragedy collide." Steenburgen and Bennett play mother and daughter country music singers.

"Outlaw Country" was shot as a pilot in 2010 starring Luke Grimes, Haley Bennett, Mary Steenburgen and John Hawkes. The pilot movie underwent reshoots in April of 2011. Then in November 2011 it was announced that FX had officially passed on the crime thriller/family drama exploring organized crime and Nashville "royalty." The pilot was finally aired on FX as a TV movie on August 23, 2012.

Please sign the guestbook at the bottom of the page and let us know what you think about "Outlaw Country."

"Outlaw Country" Pilot Filmed in Nashville

In October of 2010, the pilot for the new FX drama "Outlaw Country" was filmed in various locations across Middle Tennessee including locations in several Tennessee counties around Nashville. Some scenes were shot at the Dickson County Fairgrounds with Mary Steenbergen, Hayley Bennett, Luke Grimes and John-Paul Howard. Other scenes were shot at Cumberland Furnace, also in Dickson County.

According to the Nashville Scene, a partial list of the Nashville talent used on the production would include Jim O'Rear, Reegus Flenory, Jason Allen, Jessejames Locorriere, assistant camera Tracy Facelli, music supervisor Shooter Jennings, sound mixer Glen Trew and set PA Eric Williams.

Outlaw Country joins other recent films with country music roots shot in Nashville including "Pure Country 2: The Gift" and "Country Strong."

Mary Steenburgen

Mary Steenburgen was born February 8, 1953 in Newport, Arkansas. She plays plays country singer Anastasia Lee in "Outlaw Country."

Mary Steenburgen was the first cast member signed to the new FX drama, "Outlaw Country." While Steenburgen is reported to sing in the role, she was definitely lip synching in the concert scene shot at the Dickson County Fairgrounds in Nashville. However, she sang in the movie "The Butcher's Wife," also starring Demi Moore and Jeff Daniels, so she may really do some of her own singing in "Outlaw Country."

Speaking of singing, Shooter Jennings, son of Waylon Jennings, is also reportedly an executive consultant and music supervisor for the FX series.

Steenburgen is co-starring in another country music-themed movie -- the upcoming indie film 'Dirty Girl,' with Juno Temple, Milla Jovovich and William H. Macy. Country stars Dwight Yoakum and Tim McGraw ("Country Strong") are also in the film, which is about a girl who runs away from her Oklahoma home in 1987, according to Variety. "Dirty Girl" premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on Sept. 12, 2010.

"Country Strong" is not Steenburgen's only Southern-themed pilot in 2010. She shot another pilot earlier this year for the sitcom "Southern Discomfort" with Don Johnson and Sophia Bush.

Steenburgen is also known for her roles in "Back to the Future III," "Melvin and Howard," "One Magic Christmas," "Elf," and many other movies.

I really enjoyed it such a huge shame they Didn't allow it to air I think it would have become addictive very quickly

Please make a series of this. The pilot has just been released as a film on French TV Video on Demand and it's brilliant. So much potential for a great series. And such fabulous music. A definite hit.

Please, PLEASE bring it back as a series. Beautiful pilot. I've watched it at least ten times in the last couple months. So intriguing. I'll be terribly disappointed if nothing else comes of it.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Definitely watched movie many times now.

Got my attention want the series

    • anonymous 3 years ago

I really enjoyed the movie! I just watched it on netflix. The only problem was that it ended so abruptly. It took me by surprise when it just ended like that. I would have watched the series had it happened.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Show was awesome! Had a sweaty gritty feel about it. Very entrtaining, so I'm Sure that's the last we'll see of that! Mad Men, Walking Dead, and Hell on Wheels are the only shows I watch regularly. I did watch Last Resort but how long could they really keep that story line going anyway......

    • anonymous 3 years ago

I just finished watching this. I can't believe that ended the way it did. It definitely left me wanting watch some more of this show. I was wondering who was the guy who played Eli's buddy. His character was the one who stabbed the other at the bbq at Eli's? I was wondering who that was. I hope that Outlaw Country becomes a regular tv show.

    • anonymous 3 years ago

      make the series...already

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Yes it should!! Just watched it on netflix for the first time sept. 2013 and it was a great movie!! Just left us hanging on what happens next. Please make a follow up episode with all the same actors!! It was a great movie!!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

Saw this on a movie channel 2 weeks ago, and I've re-watched it 5 times since then. Obsessed would be a fitting word for me ATM, because I'm SO hard to please. The instant attraction between Elie and Annabelle was done super believably! And, my, the villain Tarzen! I usually fast-forward villain scenes, but he's so quirky, serious, chilling and balanced, I re-watch, trying to pick up new subtleties every time, enjoying his performance, truly "loving" to hate him. And I'm so in love with Annabelle's character! I am cheering for her to break out from under her mother's clutches and strive for her own music career (I mean, she'd have contacts to do so). And I'm so desperate for Eli to find a way to be with her *after* he finds a way to get out from under his uncle's clutches!

I love that Annabelle and Eli both know what it's like to be controlled by someone close to them, a person who *should* be helping them be all they want to be. It's why a SEQUEL could be so deep--they understand each other on a level others can't touch. There's so much scope for angst and intensity of feelings!

The past 2 weeks I've thought of it as a gripping movie with *very* fleshed-out characters, that tried to buck the Hollywood norm with an open-ended finish. But it makes sense now that I've learnt it was made as a pilot to a series.

I've raved to friends and family about it, saying how I can't stop thinking about it, and how I'd *love* a SEQUEL movie that wraps up loose ends and starts with Annabelle and Eli more empowered to change their lots in life due to their now *desperate* need for one another.

To say, "Yes! I want more!" is a vast understatement!

    • anonymous 3 years ago

I say a big "YES" that Outlaw Country should return to tv!! I liked it a lot! I would watch every week! I know many others that would too! Love country music but that rebel in me likes the southern outlaw part too! Why do you think shows like Sons Of Anarchy, Justified are so popular! This has that plus country music!! I say HELL YEAH!!!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

Please bring back the serious!!! I love it sooooooo much already one episode & i loved it!!

    • anonymous 4 years ago

It was amazing in so many different levels! It's hard to find such talented people in one show with a nice script.

    • anonymous 4 years ago

      Bring it back!

      Are you kidding me!!! Absolutely!!!!

    No! Once was enough

@anonymous: I wish they would pick it up, because it was filmed where eI live and I was an extra in it, and it would be nice to get the occasional casting call, but I think too much time has passed for them to be able to pick up where they left off. Maybe they could create a storyline with some returning cast members (whoever was available) and perhaps replace someone who might be locked into something else, but I suspect they would almost have to start over with a new cast.

I watched the pilot last night and wish FX would pick up this show. "Outlaw Country" was a great concept. It only needed a little more promotion. It's as good as a lot of other shows, better than a bunch of other shows, and let's not forget that "Seinfeld" was almost not picked up!?!

I loved Outlaw Country and found it to be quite entertaining, and left us hangin on for more. It is a shame that F/X wants to pass up on this series, Luke Grimes and the cast kept us on the edge of our seats wanting more and left too much unanswered with the last very minutes...Please reconsider and make Outlaw Country a series...we want more and I know I'm no alone.

@KathrynDarden: the cast was what made it

they wwoudlhave picked up a lot of the jenniferlawrence fans because of john hawkes

i kept thinking the girl was the same as the one from Revenge

the chemistry between grimes and that girl was electric but having the best actor john hawkes in it was unbelievable

Watching the commercial with your red faced tattooed man was quite repulsive. I doubt you could find another more unpleasant individual to promote your show. I will not watch the show in worry of see such a hellish figure again. I have no doubt the plot of the show is much of the same.
