'Naan Ee' emerges box-office winner
SS Rajamouli has done it. His very debut in Tamil has won accolades from film critics and the biggest critics of all, audience. The film is running to packed screens and raking in moolah at the box office.
Superstar Rajinikanth praised the film's villain, Sudeep, after watching the film: "I thought I was the best villain to date, but you beat me to it". Sudeep is visibly thankful to Rajamouli for this as all the top stars in south cinema including the Superstar are praises for him!
Naan Ee grossed Rs 4, 01, 61, 564 from 208 screens in TN in this one week! Even if one deduces the entertainment tax (30 %) and distributors' share, it's still a massive collection considering none of the actors are super popular in here and that the director is new to Tamil cinema.
Starring Sudeep, Nani and Samantha, the film is a revenge drama with the hero reincarnating as a fly to avenge his death.
The film that has take the audience by storm is none other than Naan Ee. The first bilingual that has clicked in Tamil, the SS Rajamouli-directed flick is flying high.
Naan Ee has now grossed Rs 4,01,61,564 from more than 200 screens in Tamil Nadu in its opening weekend (July 6 to 8). This highly entertaining animated flick starred Sudeep, Samantha, Nani and a simple housefly.
Despite the fact there were no big Kollywood actors, the movie managed to take a good opening. Sudeep, who is a big Kannada star, has made a remarkable name for himself as the villain in this movie. Mahesh Babu, Nagarajuna and Raijinikanth have praised the actor. Director Shankar told people it's a super film.
Naan Ee flying high
Director SS Rajamouli's Naan Ee seems to have passed its test at the BO with 'fly'ing colours, with audiences appreciating the theme and content of the film and the way it has been executed, along with powerful performances by the actors.
One person thrilled by the turn of events (or, should we say 'e'vents?) is dialogue writer Crazy Mohan, who apart from working on the lines in the film, has also made a cameo appearance at the end credits. He says, "The story of revenge is an age-old one, but when something or someone small in size takes revenge, it's always interesting. When I worked on Apoorva Sagodargal, this concept of someone short taking revenge worked big time, primarily because of the techniques used. And in Naan Ee, the fly is much smaller than Appu (Kamal in Apoorva Sagodargal) and the theme was executed brilliantly by director Rajamouli."
The comedian's cameo at the end as a Malayali doctor had the audiences in splits. Was it a planned one? "He (Rajamouli) wanted me to write something as effective as the 'mean/meen' conversation joke in Michael Madana Kama Rajan and then asked me to act in the scene as well. It was a sweet gesture on his part," he says.
The movie has been appreciated not just by audiences but by people in the film industry as well. In fact, director Shankar, who is known for grandeur in filmmaking, wrote the words 'super padam' on the visitors' book of a city theatre after he caught the film.
Other celebrities including Superstar Rajinikanth, Ajith kumar have enjoyed PVP Cinemas' Naan Ee and commended the cast and crew for coming up with a unique attempt.

Samantha in full swing - After a sabbatical of sorts due to ill health, the actress is back – to a deluge of offers
At least five Telugu producers are finally relieved. The hot and happening actress, Samantha, is fit and rearing to go after taking a break of nearly a month because of ill health.
The actress had fainted on the sets of the jinxed Seethamma Vakitlo Sirimalle Chettu (SVSC), featuring Mahesh Babu and Venkatesh in the lead.
The actress, among the top three in Telugu, had signed films in a spree without taking into consideration her schedule or health. She was so weak because of continuous shooting (including night sequences) in India and abroad that her doctors advised her complete bed rest and proper diet for three weeks.
Consequently, the shooting of SVSC had to be called off abruptly. In addition to SVSC, Samantha was simultaneously shooting for Autonagar Surya opposite Naga Chaitanya. Both are big-budget movies being produced by well-known film banners and unavailability of Samantha severely affected the progress of the two movies. Mahesh Babu, Naga Chaitanya and Venkatesh are among the top stars of Telugu cinema and the producers could not afford to lose their dates.
SVSC, produced by Dil Raju, in particular, has been dogged by problems since day one.
The movie was officially launched in October 2011 and shooting of a significant portion was still pending. Initially, it was touted that Trisha would be the female lead of the movie; however, she rubbished it as rumours. Then, Shriya Saran reportedly refused to be part of the movie because of remuneration issues. There were speculations that Anushka Shetty would be the female lead.
Eventually, Dil Raju announced Samantha’s name during December last year and shooting started in a full-fledged manner. Mahesh Babu and Samantha had paired up for the hit film Dookudu in 2011. Apparently, Dil Raju wanted to cash in on the success of the pair on screen. However, the consecutive setbacks have impacted the release date of the movie.
Samantha will return to the sets of Autonagar Surya first on July 20 for three days and then move to SVSC, say reliable sources. Meanwhile, Dil Raju has commenced shooting of SVSC for portions that do not require Samantha’s presence. It is reported that Venkatesh and Mahesh Babu are portrayed as siblings in SVSC. Samantha is bound to lend glamour to the movie, which has a theme of family melodrama.
The Chennai-based actress is currently basking in the glory of the success of her latest movie Eega, directed by S S Rajamouli. Though she is being flooded with projects, the actress’ schedule is full till next April. Besides, Samantha has the problem of sorting out the dates for the shooting that she missed because of her ill health.
Besides Autonagar Surya and SVSC, Samantha has two other films on hand – Yevadu (opposite Ram Charan Teja) and an untitled movie being directed by Nandini Reddy. Her next film, Yeto Vellipoyindi Manasu (known as Neethane En Ponvasantham) directed by the acclaimed film-maker Gautham Menon, is scheduled for release in August.

Gautham Menon’s upcoming romantic film Neethane En Ponvasantham, which has Jiiva and Samantha in the lead has been long in the making. The director has also been reminding the people about his film, by releasing tidbits from it now and then.
He had released a video and an audio teaser (Saindhu Saindhu) few days back, which instantly became a big hit over the internet. Now the director has decided to release the video of the song Saindhu Saindhu that was crooned by Yuvan Shankar Raja, for his dad Ilayaraja, on Sunday, July 22nd.
