Rock Star Attitude Makes the Costume, Too
It isn't just a set of clothing that will pull off a convincing Tyler, but a rock star attitude will help too. Watch some Aerosmith videos and American Idol scenes to get a better feel for the man behind the mic stand.
Top Ten Essentials for a Great Steven Tyler Costume - Let's count down the must-haves for a cool Aerosmith look here...
- A microphone. It's a visual element that just brings the entire outfit all together and makes it undeniably Steven.
- Long haired wig (or real long hair). It might be pretty tough to style your hair like Tyler's, so on second thought, maybe a wig would be your best bet. His hair isn't straight, it has lots of waves in it.
- A one piece stage outfit or one of his most famous wardrobe sets from videos like "Livin' on the Edge," "Cryin," or "Love in an Elevator."
- Tattoos. Maybe you don't want to go out and get a permanent tattoo like Tyler's under your eye, on your hand, or elsewhere, but you can fake it.
- The banter everyone associates with Tyler. Read his autobiography, watch his videos, and watch clips from American Idol. Also watch interviews, too.
- Accessories. Steven wears a lot of accessories, and he's rarely seen without them. Jewelry, scarves, and belts will help you stand out from the crowd of wannabe rock stars.
- Boots. You'll need cool rock star boots to pull off the look. Leather is good, but go for unique, too.
- Leather pants, zebra pants, or ripped jeans. The more unique the better.
- Top hat. Crazy, over-the-top, Steven style. Large, colorful, and strange.
- Necklaces, scarves, bracelets, and other accessories.
TOYS IN THE ATTIC - One of the Very BEST Aerosmith albums - If you're going to own an Aerosmith album -- buy this one!
If you're looking for just one album that defines this band, this album is it. "Sweet Emotion" and "Walk This Way" are two songs that are still to this day defining rock radio. Back to back, the album can be played through for a smooth, authentic 70's experience that doesn't sound dated, but inspired, youthful, and fresh.
There are only a handful of tracks on this album, but they're all absolutely perfect.. "Uncle Salty," "Big Ten Inch Record," and the title track, "Toys in the Attic" (which the band plays often live) will shatter your eardrums and have you begging for more. Satisfy that craving with the follow up classic "Rocks." It's vintage Steven Tyler and Joe Perry at their finest.
Suggested Microphones for the Costume - Buy these two to complete the look!
Scarves not included, so be sure to head to your local Michael's Arts and Crafts store to find some unique fabrics to hang from the mic stand. Look for long, flowing strands of all types.
This on-stage round base is very similar to what Steven uses. Attach the following microphone and you'll be in good shape.
Dependable and cool looking, it's just the thing you'll need to complete the microphone and stand combo. Also works great with a 4.5 star rating on Amazon, so you can actually use this!
Steven Tyler Wigs - These items look similar to Steven's hairstyle
It's not easy to find a wig that looks like Steven Tyler's hair, but it can be done. In the 70's and 80's, his hair was kind of feathered. In the 90's, it was more straight, and in the 2000's and beyond, it has been layered and also highlighted with blonde. Once you receive your wig, be sure to style it and tease it to give it a more custom "Steven" look. Use scissors, hair dye, and any other tools that will get the job done. After all, it's not your hair, it's a costume.
Keep in mind these wigs will look like womens hair, but not when you complete your costume!
Pinstripe One Piece 70's Stage Outfit - If you can somehow stitch one of these together...
Tyler wore this outfit a lot in the 70's, so if you're going for the really old school Tyler, this is a good choice. The only problem is you'll have to make one, or find one online -- it will be tough.
Rip it up a little to make it more authentic.
Top Hats and Pants - Two critical components for a lead singer costume
Tyler is known for his stage getups, and they always come across as over the top and unique to him. The following products are pieces that might help you pull off his style, including top hats (which he does wear during many concerts), black tank tops, and leather pants. Be creative with your getup and find a pair of pants that has a style all its own that you could picture Steven wearing. Check the photos on this page for some examples.
Search Amazon for "paisley pants" to get a great selection.
A pretty close similarity to one of Tyler's on stage hats.
Temporary Steven Tyler Tattoos - Mimic the Mama Kin tattoo or others!
Tattoos aren't all over Steven, but he does have them. His most famous and notable one is the "Mama Kin" tattoo on his upper arm. It's a pretty simple tattoo by today's standards: a flaming heart with music notes inside of it, with large flame wings to the left and to the right. The top says "Ma Kin". Mimic this tattoo with this temporary Henna kit! Print out a version of the tattoo on Google Images and trace it onto your arm, or if you're a true artist, just draw it right on there. Alternatively, you can also use a Sharpie marker (fine point) in different colors. It should wash off after a few scrubs in the shower.
