Synth Single Review: “Darkness Falls’’ by Eric C. Powell & Andrea Powell
Eric C. Powell and Andrea Powell’s Darkness Falls combines massive energy and a sense of threat. The track begins as a confused rush of sound moves hard thumping drums alongside slashing bass and slowly twisting, glowing synths that float in haunting motion. Flashing notes cut through the music with flaring light as the gigantic drums and rebounding bass propel the track.
Nasal-sounding, slowly descending synth cascades above the relentlessly bursting low end. Hollow-sounding synth wriggles before the luminous notes shine with vague threat, and the huge low end hits hard. Glistening notes tumble through the music, pouring out light. Distorted voices repeat “darkness falls” in a chanting pattern as melancholy strings twist out. A brightly flashing synth trips through the music above the hard-driving low end.
The chanting, computerized voices add a digitally impersonal element. As the strings cry out, I enjoy the spectral scream they create as brassy synths shift underneath. The pounding drum beat adds dramatic propulsion as the quickly shining synth bursts in short, staccato sounds. The gigantic drums collide, and the track pounds to an end along with the computerized voices.
