Synth Single Review: “GHOST VHS’’ by Atlas Neon & Lisa Marie Perkins
Atlas Neon, Freddy Towers & Lisa Marie Perkins’ GHOST VHS is a hurting plea for a release from suffering. The song starts with far-away percussion throbbing as slowly rippling tones are broken by tightly reverberating synth, while Lisa Marie Perkins’ voice captures the pleading in the lyrics as the percussion continues to pound.
Now the drum and bass rhythm cuts like a scalpel as the bass vibrates and clear, volleying notes leap. A trickling synth moves alongside Lisa Marie Perkins’ poignant performance, touching my heart. The song accelerates as trembling, ghostly notes carry a subtly painful melody while a synth exhales and the beat explodes with ferocious oscillations and wild tones that scream and slash.
Above the raging low end, the vocal performance bursts with fierce intensity and metallically springing notes move. As the chorus echoes again, the propulsive low end drives on before falling into quiet.
“Hold me down till I drown” is how the storyteller opens, saying it’s her last breath. She asks if the song’s subject will save her “from this dream” as she pleads, “help me die tonight.” She asks if the other person will catch her “as I scream into your light.”
