Synth Single Review: "ΔNGΞL (crooked halo dance mix)" by AnnieXMX & Nature of Wires
AnnieXMX & Nature of Wires’ ΔNGΞL (Crooked Halo Dance Mix) is about the narrator awkwardly but sincerely trying to connect with someone they care about. The song starts with ferocious bass undulating as elevated notes rise with nobility and power. AnnieXMX's voice traces through the music with a passionate exhalation above the thudding low end while a snare drum adds a sharp retort. Rounded notes climb and drift with ambiguous emotion as a broadly shining, skipping synth carries an actively dancing melody.
Warm notes glow and tremble with metallic power before the slicing low end cuts in. Aquatic notes ripple and AnnieXMX’s voice floats with a delicate tracery of emotion while the drums and bass pulsate. Chimes lightly flicker and bubbling notes run through.
Now the low end charges forward with muscle as the voiceover adds to the tension. The pumping low end drives on again while the vocals capture me with their sensitivity and feeling before the low end pounds on. I can feel the need running through the music as the swelling notes flow together and a guitar echoes in the distance before the track throbs to an end.
Our narrator talks about having knots in her stomach and being "all thumbs and fingers, awkward and shy." She admits that she overthinks and says, "sometimes I overdrink just to get by." She adds that she's not going to lie about wanting to get to know the other person better.
The storyteller points out that sometimes it takes everything she has to simply reply. She goes on to say, "it's stupid crazy, not gonna lie, but this angel's tryin’, FYI." She's "wabi-sabi" now, adding that angels need wings if they want to fly.
Since our narrator is grounded, she says, "don't know why you reeled me in, not gonna lie." She decides to pick up the phone and call the other person, adding, "I'm still tongue-tied." She points out that she overthinks and tells the song’s subject, "now this angel's dyin’, FYI."
