Books about the Tango

Read about your favourite dance

The Tango

originated in the backstreets of Argentina, where the cowboys (known as Gauchos) would dance with local girls in nightclubs.

Legend has it that the traditional Tango postures were the result of the men dancing in their high stiff cowboy boots, with the women recoiling from their unwashed bodies, but at the same time running their hands over their partner's body to determine whether he had any money in his pockets.

For the truth regarding Tango origins, and much much more, the following books let the reader in on the fascinating world of the Tango dancers and musicians, now and then.

The Meaning of Tango

The Meaning of Tango: The Story of the Argentinian Dance

If you love the Argentine Tango, this is the book for you!

Learn about the evolution of the Tango from the 19th century through to the modern day. This book will give you an insight into the many aspect of Tango: the music, the culture, and the dancers themselves.

Beautifully written by Christine Denniston who has been teaching the tango for more than 20 years and was the first non-Argentinian to teach the dance in Buenos Aires.

Dance the Tango

Who wouldn't love to be able to dance the Tango?

An elegant and dramatic dance, it never fails to impress. Imagine yourself and your spouse at your next party or family reunion... You might even choose a Tango as your wedding dance to really wow your guests.

Although there is nothing like an experienced teacher, you can gain access to some of the greatest names in Tango without leaving your home.

Of course, you will need a willing partner and enough space to stalk across the floor without kicking the dog or knocking your heirloom vase from the shelf!

Ready? Let's Tango!

Tango in the movies

Be inspired!

Tango in the Movies

From Rudolph Valentino to Morticia Addams, the Tango adds drama to many a great Hollywood movie.

In Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita, Che (Antonio Banderas) and Eva Peron (Madonna) play out their conflict in dance. For more red hot Tango action from Banderas, watch out for his Tango scene in Take The Lead.

In Moulin Rouge!, the jealousy of Christian (Ewan Macgregor) over Satine (Nicole Kidman) is transformed into a raw and passion-filled Tango routine danced by the cast to the song 'Roxane'.

Proving that older men can still have that Latin spirit, Richard Gere is taught to Tango by Jennifer Lopez in Shall We Dance? (although the original Japanese version is - in my opinion - still the best!) and a nimble-footed Al Pacino impresses his partner (and the rest of us!) in Scent of a Woman.

True Tango lovers will want to see the 1998 Carlos Saura film Tango for the total dance experience.

Tango music

Time to get dancing

Tango Music

Tango music has a distinctive sound that even the dance-phobic can often recognise. The Tango music that we think of as the authentic Tango sound today is typically played on an instrument called a bandoneon.

However, modern musicians and singers have adopted the Tango and blended its beat with their own musical styles, such as Shakira's Objection Tango.

On shows such as Dancing with the Stars or, in the UK, Strictly Come Dancing, many of the Tango dances are performed to these modern interpretations of the classic Tango.
