The new body horror movie Together reminds us of what we can all do if we work together.

It also reminds us that Dave Franco is not James Franco no matter how much we try, no matter how much your Aunt Floris still tries to convince you and others that they’re the same actor but just wearing different shoes. Go easy on Aunt Floris, it’s been a challenge since the divorce and subsequent death. But we can help her if we all work together.

SYNOPSIS THAT TIES IT ALL TOGETHER

Together opens with an unsettling prologue involving a hidden well, some religious zealots and dogs doing things dogs really shouldn’t be doing. And no it doesn’t involve peanut butter so let’s try to keep our minds out of the gutter together.

Speaking of the gutter, that’s where we meet a couple having a going away party. They’re moving to the sticks with minimal cell service where guys with minimal teeth play the banjo and tell you how pretty your mouth is. Together.

His name is Tim (Dave Franco). He’s in his mid-thirties and still chasing his dream of becoming a rock star. Together.

Her name is Millie (Dave Franco’s real life spouse and sibling) and the reason they’re moving to the boonies is that she got a job teaching and this probably won’t be a point of resentment. She’ll be able to focus more on individual students because there are fewer of them and hopefully fewer school shootings.. Together.

Millie awkwardly “proposes” marriage in front of all of their friends and Tim awkwardly f*cks up by hesitating and then leaving the room and walking around the city like Tom Cruise in Eyes Wide Shut. But this will blow over soon enough because their love is strong. Together.

It’s only a couple of hours away from the city. It’s not that big a deal. Together.

Millie and Tim are getting used to their surroundings. Its kind of fun not living in the hustle and bustle of the big city where they frequently got turned out by the local pimps because they’re both pretty and white. Tim and Millie have never been hiking TOGETHER and it’ll be so much fun…together.

Until they fall into a giant hole together.

What a trauma bond, waiting to get rescued from a hole. Tim and Millie notice there’s infrastructure that’s been buried inside. There are few better omens than an underground church where no one can hear you scream even if you do it together.

Tim and Millie eventually get out and go back home. They’re no worse for wear and even have a renewed sense of love for each other. Maybe falling into a giant hole was the best thing that’s ever happened to them. It worked for Batman. Together.

Except now Tim and Millie are *really* attracted to each other. Whenever they’re relatively far away from each other some other instinct prevails and forces them to be…together.

Can’t it be any worse than Day Shift or The Rental? Together.

What Works With Together

  • The most uncomfortable sex scene you’ll see in 2025, upending that one with the Distortis in Jurassic World Rebirth. You want to look away but can’t because you need to car-wreck your way into seeing how bad it will get. Just when you think it can’t get any worse…
  • With Together being basically a two hander, it’s difficult to say which performance is “better” until you realize how well Alison Brie and Dave Franco compliment each other in their f*cked up dysfunction. Writer/director Michael Shanks gives you just enough to know that Tim and Millie probably shouldn’t be together, but it’s the lived-in performances by the real life couple that make the barbs cut deeper than they should. When the stranger things start happening, it just feels like the (un)natural extension of where the relationship was headed.
  • Lest you forget you were here for the body horror. Together doesn’t have as many gross out moments as you’d expect. They’re well-spaced out for maximum gag reflex. You’ll never look at a _____ the same way again.

What Doesn’t Work With Together

  • The Law of The Economy of Characters states that every character is onscreen for a reason. Like April’s Drop, what you suspect of someone will definitely maybe be correct unless it’s not.

Overall

If you like dysfunctional relationship dramas but also like blood and guts and _____. You and your loved ones should watch Together…collectively.
