Top 10 Creepiest Clowns

Updated on March 30, 2017

The Top 10 Creepiest Clowns

The creepiest clowns I have ever seen have all been in horror movies. With the Halloween season just beginning, I have been thinking about costumes, accessories and delicious but gross Halloween snack recipes, so it's only natural that a creepy clown memory would jump into my head. I am one of those people who is afraid of clowns and I can't remember when this fear first reared it's spooky little head. As a child I often went to the small circus shows and carnivals in the area, and as far back as I remember I was not afraid of the clowns at all. Neither can I remember a traumatic event that would cause such a fear to begin. All I know is that when I look into those painted, red nosed faces, I feel afraid.

If you are looking for a fun and creepy Halloween costume or just like scary clowns, this lens will have plenty of ideas for you. Which clown would you want to dress up as?

The Fear Of Clowns

Coulrophobia is the fear of clowns. Most theories agree that this fear starts at a young age because of a negative incident, a meeting with a clown that scared the child. Perhaps these children saw one of the many horror stories that depict the clown as an evil killer who slashes his way across the country while working in a traveling circus. Whatever the reason for this fear, it's real, it's frightening and it might prevent you from showing some of the creepiest clown movies in your home during the Halloween movie season!

Some say the killer clown phenomenon began when Paul Kelly, a drinker and a drugger, took on the character of Weary Willie and at some point took the lives of two of his companions. Another murderer that helped bring about the idea of the clown as evil was John Gacy, a mass murdered who often entertained children dressed up as a clown.

One of my favorite Florida theme parks has killer clowns in it's Halloween parade every year, so if you visit Universal Studios in Orlando, be forewarned.

The Top 10 Creepiest Clown Movies

What are the top 10 creepiest clown movies? There are so many scary clown movies to choose from, how do you narrow it down to just ten? Think back and try to remember the first time a clown made you feel so creepy and scared you had to scream out loud! One of the clowns I have listed is from a TV miniseries, but he was still quite scary!

1. Pennywise From It - 2017

It by Stephen King was a gruesome and creepy clown movie. This book and film tell the story of Pennywise, the dancing clown, and a group of kids who form a club called, "The Losers Club". The boys names are: Bill (Stuttering Bill), Ben (Haystack), Richie (Trashmouth), Eddie, and Mike. Pennywise seems to turn up about every 30 years or so, and sometimes comes in forms other than a clown. During this visit one of the boys, Eddie, dies. We never actually learn what "IT" is, so there's an opening left for a sequel.

Instead of a sequel, the 2017 version of It is due out soon. Watch the theater listings to find out when it opens.

The Clown From Poltergeist

Remember Poltergeist? Steven and Diane Freeling move into a new home with their three kids, Dana, Robbie and Carol Anne. Strange events begin to happen and in one scene a scary clown doll comes to life. It half scares Robbie to death, and that's only the beginning of the frightening scenes in this horror movie from Steven Spielberg.

You can find Poltergeist here.

The Joker

The Joker Is Batman's Worst Nightmare

The Joker Is One Evil Clown

The Joker from Batman is certainly one evil clown, in fact he is down right sadistic. He has been portrayed by Jack Nicholson in Batman and Heath Ledger in the The Dark Knight. The Joker is on many of the top 100 villian lists, in fact, on one he made it all the way to #1. It is a well known fact to Batman fans that The Joker is Batman's greatest enemy.

The Joker Halloween costume is not only scary, it's easy to find. The Joker is a very popular Halloween costume idea and it's a look you can create for yourself with a homemade costume or a look you can buy at just about any Halloween costume store. If you are a Batman fan, but don't want to be the masked crusader this year, take a good look at the Joker to wear as your costume this Halloween.

Killer Klowns From Outer Space

Can't we just worry about our own earth bound clowns? No, we have to worry about clown dressed aliens coming to get us!

Do scary clown costumes sound like a good Halloween costume idea to you? Well then the Killer Clown look is perfect for you to dress up in this Halloween. There's some pretty scary clowns out there and Killer Clowns are always near the top of the list.

He Is The Scariest Of All

This character is the scariest of all the movie clowns because he is real. Weary Willie as real too, but he killed while drunk and drugging, while Gacy killed for years under the guise as a good guy in the neighborhood going so far as to dress up as a clown to visit kids in the hospital. John Wayne Gacy was a very scary character. But the scariest part of all was this is a true story.

Gacy is a pretty gory Halloween costume idea because John Gacy was a real. If you want a terrifying costume for Halloween this year, the Gacy look isn't too difficult to recreate at home using a clown costume and some costume makeup.

The film "Killjoy" tells the story of Michael, a teenager who has a crush on a girl named Jada. Jada already has a boyfriend and he is a gang type character named Lorenzo, but that doesn't stop Michael. He continues to pursue Jada, and he is threatened by Lorenzo and his friends to stop. Feeling desperate, Michael tries to use black magic to bring to life a doll, which he hopes to use against Lorenzo and his friends. Unfortunately, this does not work and one day Lorenzo decides to teach Michael a lesson and ends up killing Michael.

A year later, Lorenzo and his thug friends are killed by Killjoy, the physical incarnation of Michael's doll, who is seeking revenge for Michael's death. Jada learns that she is the only one who can kill Killjoy and send his spirit back to hell, because she was the reason that Michael fooled around with black magic in the first place.

Jada stabs the Killjoy doll repeatedly but at the end of the film learns that it is impossible to kill Killjoy forever.

I saw a Killjoy mask that make this an easy and frightening costume to dress up in.

The Zombie Clown From Zombieland

I loved the movie Zombieland and was so glad to see a zombie clown, because with all the zombie movies out lately, I haven't noticed a clown before. This combines two of moviedoms great scary characters together...the zombie and the clown!

Zombies are so in as Halloween costumes and clowns are always in the top 10 scariest costumes, so put them together and you've got a great costume theme!
