Valentine's Day Horror Movies
The 10 (or More) Best Horror Movies for Valentine's Day
So what makes for a great Valentine's Day horror movie? This is a question that is probably only asked among a very small and strange group of people and I'll be honest - I'm one of them. Since I so thoroughly enjoyed the page I made about Christmas themed horror movies I thought, why not move on to the next one? I mean New Year's Day doesn't count as a holiday - I don't care about the arguments it's just a random cold winter day - so we have to jump forward to Valentine's Day. And while I feel I can make a good list of ten or more great horror movies for Valentine's Day, there are very few movies specifically geared around spring's love day. In fact that list might just be two or three. However there are horror movies where every "love scene" ends up in murder, zombies interrupt a twisted scene of debauchery, or the movie just seems like a lot of horrific fun interrupting the romance. When you broaden it out a bit, this gives us quite a list to work with...and writers, directors, and producers - I'm just saying we're really missing out on a great niche opportunity here. Outside of slashers - there's an entire sub-genre of horror films we haven't experienced yet: the Valentine's Day horror movie!
The Two Giant Valentine Day's Horror Flicks
My Bloody Valentine & Valentine
When it comes to direct Valentine's Day based horror, there really are only two (three if you count the re-make) horror films that are directly related to Valentine's Day, which means you are going to find these on pretty much every single list of top ten valentine horror movies. Those classic movies are: My Bloody Valentine along with the modern re-make My Bloody Valentine 3-D, not to mention the somewhat underrated Valentine which features Denise Richards when she was universally considered really, really hot. These three films are a great way to kick off a horror fest at any type of an anti-Valentine's Day party.
What better start can you have than a movie where a mine collapse results in several miners dying because a couple skipped work to go to a Valentine's Day dance. The sole survivor gets revenge and warns the town never to have another dance or else. They don't listen, and horror goodness ensues, eventually resulting in a 3-D remake to bring some great love day gore to a new generation. And hey, flying pick axes aren't a bad way to get things started.
The only other blatantly themed horror movie specifically tied to Valentine's Day is the appropriately titled Valentine. This movie might not be the greatest by horror movie standards, but it's fun and for those horror fans who first fell in love with the genre from the "outcast gets back at those who spurned them" standpoint - it's a nice little romp that delivers what you expect from it. Great trailer, good ending, and with all the funny horror tropes worth exploiting for satire. In other words, not a bad watch if you're going solo on the second month of the year.

New Valentine's Day Horror
One Indie Horror Flick and One Horror Comedy Zombie Love Story?
This section is for two high quality movies that might soon be joining the ranks of the all time awesome Valentine's Day horror flicks. One is an independent film that has done a great job of marketing itself to a very high rating on IMDB, and a zombie love story that looks like a great horror comedy (as of this writing it hasn't come out yet).
The independently made horror flick of Broken Hearts pays homage to the big time slasher movies, and one thing I rather like about this one is that while the independent side of it shows glaringly sometimes, it has a plot that actually is pretty intriguing for a slasher. It's not plain psychosis or unexplained - the killer is obsessed with a girl whom he envisions demanding that he has to take out all potential suitors in increasingly bizarre and weird hallucinations in order to win her love for the big dance. It's not complex, but for a slasher horror set up, it's actually pretty well done!
Warm Bodies is a big budget release going under a really great horror-comedy-romance theme. The trailer can be found further down on this lens and offers an awesome take. One breed of zombie still thinks, another doesn't. They just wander around and wander around further. Then there are the frightening "skulls" that are just driven beasts. Zombie boy falls in love with human girl and slowly becomes human - and there love brings more of the zombies back to learning how to be human. And then the survivor humans with guns come into play. Looks fun, looks crazy, and it could go either way with being very funny heart warming by end or really dark. Definitely one of the most unique zombie movies I've seen around in years and looking forward to seeing it in theaters!
Creepy Love Based Horror Flicks
The second wave of worthy Valentine's Day horror movies
Okay, so this would be a short list if we stopped at directly themed movies. Heck, if we were going really strict the only list we could make would be 5 best Valentine's Day horror flicks. We can do better than that. Time to move on to the tier two flicks of horror movies. Maybe it's really creepy love, a loosely based legend of lost love, or just horror around romance. Hey, why not include these on the list? They're worthy of belonging - and these are some amazing horror flicks.
May I absolutely LOVE this movie! Awkward girl falling in love, wanting a friend, but what can you do when you can't find the perfect friend? One person has great eyes, one a great tattoo, one has wonderful hands....why not make a best friend with all the perfect pieces? The horror movie May is one of the most unique and well done (in my opinion) movies in years. Clever, fascinating, and awesome. Highly recommended!
Teeth What do I say about this one? Okay - teeth in a vagina. Guys wince. Girls with guy friends who like horror - good movie. Actually a very well done film with a unique idea, but yeah, it is what it is. Look for the trailer on YouTube if you want a gist of what you're in for.
Lover's Lane An urban legend horror movie. X number of years ago a bloody murder happened on Lover's Lane - and fast forward to another Valentine's Day and a homicidal maniac with a hook. Fun, fun!
The Vanishing The Vanishing is a crazy one. Imagine that you are with the love of your life and during a trip together she simply disappears. Where is she? What happened? But there's no sign. Then three years later you are contacted by people claiming to have kidnapped her. What would you do to get her back? How would you deal with the insanity - and how far would you go to be reunited?
Enduring Love Not many people have heard of this one, but it's worth the mention on the list. Think fatal attraction with Daniel Craig, and the obsession is one guy with another. The performances are amazing, as the creepiness factor in some of these scenes gets to the point where you just squirm from how uncomfortable it is just watching. Definitely ranks up there for love based horror stories that flip the bird to conventional Valentine's Day sappiness.

Loosely Related Horror Movies
Hey they're still great horror flicks for V-Day
They might not be directly tied to obsessive love, stalking, or Valentine's Day - but it's a nice mix of flicks that fit the theme...
Misery: I'll never forget this movie when it comes to horror or sociopaths again. One of my greatest sins was creating a very popular list article of the best 10 sociopaths in movies and I forgot Kathy Bates' chilling portrayal of obsessive fan Annie Wilkes. Based on the incredible book by Stephen King, and one of the best movies ever made off of a Stephen King book, Kathy Bates takes the role of an obsessive fan to an entirely new level. You'll know if a person has watched this movie by mentioning "hobbling" and watching people squirm.
High Tension (Haute Tension): This selection won't be for everyone. This is a particularly violent and aggressive horror flick that comes with a lot of blood and gore. The tension is strong, and for blood spatter fans, you'll be seeing plenty of red on Valentine's Day.
Cemetery Man: Shouldn't the horror movie with one of the most simply wrong love scenes ever make the Valentine's Day horror movie list? Obviously my answer is of course! A great Italian zombie movie that hits deeper questions of philosophy, morals, and plain old fun to go with the gore.
Dead Alive: Peter Jackson with a low budget going all out on a crazy zombie film. Enough said?

One of the all time great female sociopaths in any movie EVER!! If you doubt it at all, just remember: HOBBLING!
Extremely intense and disturbing - be prepared.
Cemetery Man has achieved cult status - and displays one of the more messed up love scenes of any horror film...it's just the principle of the thing, you know?
An overbearing Mom was bad enough before she became a zombie master - Peter Jackson directed awesome horror film.
Old or Cult Classic Horror Movies Based on Love Stories
They're weird, but they're there.
Finishing the list with a few of the classics - think love, think romance, think classic horror movies. Sometimes you don't want a gore splatter fest or a 3-D event - you just want the good classics.
King Kong 1976: Personally this is my favorite of all the King Kong movies. Granted now some of the scenes of King Kong falling in love with his human sacrifice seems....disturbingly odd to say the least. Still, it's entertaining and there aren't many good movies with a giant ape who learns to love and be noble, so why not?
King Kong 1933: Hey, you can't argue with the original King Kong movie. And we're not even going to speak about the abomination remake from later on. There were two good original King Kong movies. So enjoy them both!
Bride of Frankenstein: Hey it's Valentine's Day - why not enjoy the somewhat sappy "horror movie" based around the popular cinematic love story of Frankenstein and his bride?
Pet Semetary: Hey it's a love movie! Love for the family pet, love for the son, love for the wife/mom....and it generally goes downhill fast for the guy but hey, it fits in with the Valentine's Day horror motif!
Bride of the Re-Animator: Modern cult classic - and teams up with Pet Semetary to let you know that some things are just better off left the way they are.
Take A Look at the Classic Horror
Beauty conquers the beast. Beast gets loose - doesn't go so well...
My favorite of all the King Kong movies, to be honest. Very well done, though occasionally unintentionally disturbing.
Love - reanimated corpses - and the original horror for Valentine's Day.
Anyone reading the book knows the mistakes made here to try and bring back loved ones....and how well that goes in a Stephen King novel.
Cult classic. Another bride movie.

Ever Heard of Lo?
Great independent horror flick
If you haven't heard of the movie Lo, don't feel ashamed. Okay, if you consider yourself a cult classic movie, horror film, or independent film aficionado then maybe you should just a little :) This is an amazing and extremely unique independent movie that definitely hits the Valentine's Day themes even if it is unconventional. Mocking demons, a main character yearning for his girl who he knows is in Hell, and a play like format throughout the film combine for an incredible and intriguing ride. This horror flick (also sometimes called a horror comedy) is very smartly written, extremely well executed, and worth the watch. If you want a unique experience for Valentine's Day or any other, this well received film from the Austin film festival should be on your must watch list.
