Will you leave earth? When Worlds Collide
Won the 1951 Academy Award for Special Effects
Finally, a movie I really enjoyed. Actually, I recommended this movie last summer to my daughter and son-in-law in southern Utah, Wayne County, where they are on the committed to select movies for BIFF - the Bicknell International Film Festival. Each year they have a theme, and last year it was science fiction movies. They look for B movies that are so bad they are fun to watch, in retrospect. This was a third or fourth choice for them.
What I like about the film is the premise. What would you do if a meteor were approaching earth that would do devastation like the one that extinguished the dinosaurs? Would you attempt to build a space ship leave the planet? That is what they decided. But, who decides who goes? THAT is the rest of the story.
It is a bit of a Noah's Ark kind of question. Do you take lots of single males and females? Do you take married couples? Do you take scientists? Do you break up families? What would you do, if you had a choice?
Of course, any choice will raise objections. Any choice process with raise objections. As the end approaches, panic sets in, in the general populace, of course. How is that going to be handled? Will the mobs destroy the rocket and prevent it from taking off, no matter who is on it? Will your favorites make it on board as passengers? Do you want them to be, actually? These are questions this film addresses, and asks each of us to think about. I enjoyed watching it again last summer. I hope you will to! ;-)
