Dr. Temple Grandin was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3 in the early 1950's. Despite this, she has been quite successful in her life. Her abilities have far surpassed those that her early doctor predicted. Although Temple didn't speak until she was 4, she learned how to communicate, how to study and function in society. She went on to receive a doctorate, a masters and a bachelor degree.
Temple designed better handling facilities for livestock. By using her visual thought processes, she was able to conceive of systems that would reduce stress on animals. This allowed them to be handled more efficiently and resulted in fewer livestock losses.
Temple has also given a voice to those affected by autism. By writing and lecturing about her personal history, experiences and theories, she has brought hope to many parents of autistic children. Her book "Emergence: Labeled Autistic" was a ground breaking documentation into the actual workings of an autistic brain. Any family that has been affected by autism should check out all of the books that Temple Grandin has written and they should also watch the great movie about her.
Temple has received several honors during her lifetime. She was named one of the most influential people in the world by Time Magazine. The National Cattlemen's Association gave her their Lifetime Achievement award. She has also received the thanks of many parents of autistic children and their doctors.
The incidence of autism is increasing in society. Many parents have had to quickly get to know the realities of the affliction when their children have been diagnosed with it. Temple Grandin is providing an excellent public service both by her actions and her sharing of herself. She is an amazing woman.
