Activities That Boost Your Child's Cognitive Skills

Updated on August 14, 2018

Cognitive development is nothing but a term used to determine the way in which kids learn and interact with their surroundings and environment. A kid attains certain cognitive skills once he or she meets certain developmental milestones. Any child benefits from external actions that boost their learning and as a parent, you should encourage your child’s cognitive development in terms of memory, concentration, perception, etc. by integrating few simple activities in their daily routine.

A research has shown that a child’s cognitive development as well as language learning process is highly impacted in a home learning environment. The three major features of home learning that boosts your child’s cognitive skills are interaction with people around them, availability of books or toys and participation in learning activities. As a parent, you can perform some of the following activities to support your child’s cognitive development and growth.

  • Songs and Music

Music is probably the best way to engage your kids and catch their attention. Introduce poems or sing-alongs and encourage them to sing with you. Introduce catchy music or songs and play them often. Children are more likely to pick up a song and eventually they will start singing along. This activity will also boost your baby’s word identification and memory.

  • Exploring Places

Take evening strolls to nearby places to expose your kids to new surroundings. Take them along to your trips at grocery store, library, salon, etc. Doing this will stimulate their curiosity and make them interact with strangers. This little things will definitely boost up their learning.

  • Counting Exercise

Incorporate counting exercise in the child’s routine by taking random opportunities like asking them to count the number of lampposts in the lane or the number of toys the child has. Start by introducing them to numbers one to ten and once they get a satisfactory hold of it.

  • Playful Interrogation

Asking random questions to your ward is a good way to help them think. This will teach them the importance of personal opinion. This will push their cognitive development because of brain involvement in thinking while they respond. Asking will teach them how to solve a problem and get a better understanding of functionality of environment around them.

  • Introduction to Colours and Shapes

Ask your child to identify different colours and shapes while interacting with them. Show them different pictures to demonstrate colour and shape. As they grow older you can ask them to describe objects to you and ask them to find objects like round brown balloon or square white tile, etc.

Along with the activities mentioned above, you should maintain a continuous interaction with your kids. Give them choices, ask them questions and introduce them to new a phenomenon from time to time in order to boost their cognitive development.
