What to Pack in Your Hosiptal Bag for Delivery
Packing Your Hospital Bag
You have made it to 38 weeks and your now playing the waiting game. Let’s pack your bag!
When it comes to packing your hospital bag keep in mind most of the basic items you will need will be provided. You will want to avoid over-packing, remember you will have to bring it all home as well as the gifts any visitors bring.
Below, I have compiled a list of must-haves for your hospital stay.
What the Hospital Usually Supplies
The hospitals have really shaved off time when it comes to how long you stay after giving birth. What used to be 4-6 days is now 1-3 days depending on if it was a vaginal delivery or a c-section and the circumstances.
They will make every effort to make you as comfortable as possible. However, there is nothing like having your own things.
The items the usually provide are diapers, receiving blankets, pacifiers, wipes, and formula bottles (if your not nursing). They also give the baby a little beanie and top to wear.
You will not need to pack much for the baby, just the special or extra things you want to bring.
As for you, they will provide you sanitary napkins, beautiful mesh underwear, meals and a few other medical things you may need after the birth.
For Mom
1. Pajamas/Nightgown/Bathrobe
Yes, they will provide you will their lovely robes, however, you will want to change into something less revealing as soon as you can.
Also helps if you plan on having visitors or have to go down to the nursery.
2. Slippers/Flip Flops
You will not want to put your shoes on or walk the floors barefoot. Slippers or flip-flops are comfortable and easy to slip on and off.
3. Lip Balm /Lotion
The hospitals get a little dry and so will your skin especially your hands due to all the hand washing.
Bring lip balm and your own lotion (unscented if possible).
4. Snacks
Pack some healthy snacks in your bag or treats that you enjoy. You may not be able to leave the floor and if there are no vending machines the most you will get is crackers or a sandwich.
5. Cell Phone Charger
I cannot emphasize this enough. The number of calls, texts, pictures and googling will leave your battery dead in no time.
6. Toiletries
Pack a toiletry bag with your toothbrush/paste, hair care products, and makeup.
You will feel better after a nice shower and you're pulled together.
7. Bra /Underwear
Pack underwear that can be used comfortably with a sanitary napkin. Make sure your bra is comfortable as well you may still be tender.
8. Clothes
Bring comfortable clothes to go home in or you can wear there during the day. Remember you will still be a little bloated and won‘t want something that is to tight on your tummy.
9. Nursing Gear
If you have decided to breastfeed you should bring a nursing bra, pads and nipple cream. You will be in a private room so if you want to skip bringing the bra and just do you that is fine as well.
10. Insurance Information
Make sure you have your Insurance information. Even if you did pre-register with the hospital you may still be asked for this.
For Baby
1. Going Home Outfit
You will need to pack an outfit for your little one to wear home. You can also bring onsies or other outfits to dress them in while you're in the hospital.
2. Hat
You will get the standard beanie from the hospital, but you will want to put a different one on for the way home.
3.Socks
Little booties or socks are often an overlooked item or one that is lost, bring a couple of pairs.
4.Scratch Mittens
Scratch mittens are used to prevent the baby from scratching their face with their fingernails.
5. Blanket
Bring a light blanket to use if the room gets too chilly or for the ride home.
If you have a pet bring an extra blanket, use it to capture the smell of the baby. When you get home or if your partner doesn't stay the night place this by your dog so they can adjust to the babies smell.
6. Car Seat
The base of the car seat should already be properly installed in your vehicle. If you're not sure if it is the local fire department or police station will check it.
Bring the seat to the room so you don't have to fumble when you are outside.
