How do you encourage your children to read?

Updated on May 1, 2012

As a Children's Author and a mother of two small children I am always being asked "How do I encourage my kids to read?" Well my son is in 4th grade and my daughter is only 4 but they love books and love to read. I encourage them by letting them help inspire my books my son reads my work and tells me where it is "Flawed" either it's boring and needs something extra or something just needs to be removed all the way around. My daughter inspires my illustrations to my work if they catch her eye and she responses to them in a positive note then they are just what the book calls for however she has no problem telling me if a color should be changed. I also encourage my son to read to his sister to help encourage her to read if he is teaching her he as well is learning at the same time. I have had lots of parents disagree with my methods because my children are not like most children we do not have TV. or video games. school comes first then chores and I am a firm believer children should be outside playing no lounging around all day in front of a tv or computer. Sports, Arts and Crafts, Music, Books this is what I encourage my children with. But when you dont have all that a book is just as good. Books can take you around the world, under the sea, into outerspace, and back in time and you never have to leave your home.
