For whatever reason, at one time or another, you will need a copy of your birth certificate. In most cases, things get lost when you need to move across the state, or across the continent. Any time a major event occurs in your life, important papers always seem to get misplaced.
I've only needed to make copies for my Hawaii birth certificate twice in my lifetime; once when I got married, and the second, when we moved from Hawaii to Florida. A major move by any standard - something is bound to get lost during those 6000 plus miles.

It's important to know that you'll actually be in contact with the right people, and not just putting more private and personal information out there for scammers to take advantage of you. Most legal documents that you need is handled through the Hawaii State Department of Health. If every you search on the web, make sure that the agency that is helping you, is an agency that you can trust, and that is directly affiliated with the State of Hawaii. Who can request a copy of the original birth certificate
You can request a copy for yourself, a spouse, children - generally everyone in the family. Legal guardians, ex-spouses, and those that have authority through court orders will all be able to obtain a birth certificate. For a more detailed listing check the link at the bottom of this article.

You can walk in and take care of business on location:
- Monday through Friday (excluding holidays)
- 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
- Room 103 (1st floor) of the Health Department building,
- 1250 Punchbowl Street in Honolulu
Applicants will need to bring in a government issued picture ID card such as a Hawaii drivers license or state ID and have your application filled out prior to coming to the window. Applications will be available at the office. A payment of $10 is needed to have the agency start your search. No personal checks are allowed. Allow 10 days for the agency to find your birth certificate, and unfortunately even if they do not find it, your fee will be kept to pay for the initial search.

Include the completed application, a photocopy front and back of a government photo ID, and include the $10 fee. Do not include a personal check or it will be returned, instead use a money order, cashiers check, or certified check.
