Parents Beware: Do you know what your teens are texting?
Every parent is aware that there tween and teens are constantly on theIr phones. Their phones seem to be glued on their bodies. The cannot leave the room, or even go to the bathroom without totally holding their beloved cell phone. Even when a parent or any adult is addressing them in conversation, they have no respect to put there phone down and engage in eye contact. Even when they are out with their friends they still are involved with other social media. This activity does not seem to be rude or disrespectful in their perspective. With that being said, as an adult, I understand how addicting these phones & iPads are. I get it. All those notifications, games, apps, etc.
Being a a good parent, we all want to give our children the best of everything. But with that being said, parents also need to be responsible and monitor there children's activities. A lot of parents are not aware of these crazy apps that can actually expose your child to predators, risky behaviors that can lead to sexting. They have been many cases of cyber bullying that have led to suicide.
Its very important to talk to your children and educate them on ethical behavior. Once the put a picture out there it can never be deleted. But first and foremost you need to educate yourself to the social media that may be exploiting your child. May I suggest this book by Brian Housman, "Tech Savvy Parenting" also available on kindle
This book also address the limits of video gaming and also the ratings for Teens versus Mature.
I hope this information will be a helpful guide. It's a wonderful tool to keep in your parental toolbox. With all this technology us parents need all the help we can get. It takes a village to keep these children safe.
