Hey ya it's a snow day!

What's a snow day?

My daughter and I have lived in the city of Chicago for over seven years. Every year the snow came piling down, but never was she allowed the indulgence of a snow day. Ten inches, eleven inches, a foot of snow, still the city plows came out, and despite half the kids not arriving via bus or parental limousine, they still had school.

But this year we moved to the country. My daughter is thirteen now, and tonight, December 9, 2009 the snow is piling up around nine inches outside. I watched as my daughter watched excitedly as the announcements came on the television, hidden beneath the main viewing area as we watched the season finale of The Biggest Loser we waited, and waited, and suddenly, amongst all the other larger school districts, bam! My daughters school district had closed! A first! We're all dreaming of indoor pools, ski chalets and wandering away to some exotic hotel! But if that didn't happen, we were happy to be holed up in our warm little apartment!

So tonight she went to bed with sweet anticipation of the snowy fun of tomorrow. The magical white playland of wet and icy frost covering the woods and the sidewalks with a meandering carpet of natural playland! I enjoyed every minute of it when I was a kid. I am so glad, and so grateful my daughter gets to embrace the fantastic wonder hiding behind all those feet and walls of snow!

Thanks for the compliment habee. On that day I laughed with my wife about how pretty the snow is the first time there's a big snow storm every year! Maybe this will be your year :)

Oh, you're making me wish for snow! We only get it once a decade or so. Enjoyed the read!

Thanks Jen! I know what you mean, those were the days!!! I think that's part of the reason I was so happy for my daughter to finally get one!

      Thanks for stopping by.

I enjoyed this hub Ben, it reminded me of how excited we would get when we found out school was closed. Nice to revisit those times when our biggest problem was whether we'd have school the next day or not. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. (-:

Thanks Green Lotus! We got out in it a little today, my girls are making Monster cookies in a bit, then I'm going to go out and try and dig out the vehicles! I landed for 24 hours in Atlanta one year in the middle of winter, after leaving the grey slush of the north it was like walking into a floral greenhouse in your town!

Going to post a few more pics here later...

Enjoy the day! Here in Atl, we don't get much snow, but if there are flurries they close the schools!

Thanks Catherine! That's 116F !!! I looked it up! Man I love that kind of hot! I hope your kids get their Heat Day! Thanks for stopping by Catherine! The snow is beautiful, the snow plows piled up the snow to the front of our driveway so none of the families here are going to work today!

Thanks frogdropping, I'm going to post a few more pics when we leave to walk to the Piggly Wiggly (grocer) to get some cookie supplies! It's an emergency! Appreciate the warm compliment!

Hope she had fun! My kids dream of it getting hot enough for their school to close. Last year we had 47 degrees C - but it was in the school holidays! The snow looks beautiful.
