What's a snow day?
My daughter and I have lived in the city of Chicago for over seven years. Every year the snow came piling down, but never was she allowed the indulgence of a snow day. Ten inches, eleven inches, a foot of snow, still the city plows came out, and despite half the kids not arriving via bus or parental limousine, they still had school.
But this year we moved to the country. My daughter is thirteen now, and tonight, December 9, 2009 the snow is piling up around nine inches outside. I watched as my daughter watched excitedly as the announcements came on the television, hidden beneath the main viewing area as we watched the season finale of The Biggest Loser we waited, and waited, and suddenly, amongst all the other larger school districts, bam! My daughters school district had closed! A first! We're all dreaming of indoor pools, ski chalets and wandering away to some exotic hotel! But if that didn't happen, we were happy to be holed up in our warm little apartment!
So tonight she went to bed with sweet anticipation of the snowy fun of tomorrow. The magical white playland of wet and icy frost covering the woods and the sidewalks with a meandering carpet of natural playland! I enjoyed every minute of it when I was a kid. I am so glad, and so grateful my daughter gets to embrace the fantastic wonder hiding behind all those feet and walls of snow!
