St. Patrick's Day Activities for Preschool Age Kids
Fun Ideas for St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day is a wonderful holiday to celebrate with your children. This day can be festive, fun, educational, and spiritual. The story of St.Patrick is one that will excite your children and allow them to see the Saints as heroes. If you teach your kids about this great man, you will help to make this more than a secular day filled with green and beer. This will become a day to celebrate our faith and to honor a great man when you help your kids with these activities.
A great place to start would be to read the story of St.Patrick to your children. St.Patrick was born in Scotland, but at around the age of 14 he was captured and taken to Ireland as a slave to herd sheep. He was a slave until about 20 years old and during his days of slavery he prayed to God. He had dreams that told him the people of Ireland needed his help. He studied to become a priest and later became a bishop, traveling all of Ireland spreading the Gospel. He converted thousands of people to Christianity over a period of 40 years.
St. Patrick is known for using the shamrock to teach people about the Holy Trinity. The shamrock shows the 3 leaves (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit), yet it is one plant. It is also said that St.Patrick stood on a mountain with a wooden staff and banished all the snakes out of Ireland.
Here are a few fun ways to celebrate this holiday!
* Have green milk (use green dye) and shamrock cookies for a snack.
* Wear all green, of course!
* Play Irish music and read some traditional Irish stories.
* Enjoy a traditional Irish meal of corned beef and cabbage.
* Play some games that involve banishing snakes. We used pipe cleaners to represent snakes and hid them all around the house for the kids to find. They enjoyed pretending to be St.Patrick and clear out the house of all the snakes!
*Make a shamrock magnet to remember the Trinity. Cut 3 green hearts out of construction paper or foam. Write Father, Son and Holy Spirit on each of them. Glue together on to a rectangular piece of paper or foam. Make a stem. Attach a magnet or pin to the back.
*Ask your children to share with you about St.Patick. How can they grow to be more like him?
* Use this day to pray for the people of Ireland.
* There are many pictures of St.Patrick available to print out if you do a Google search.
