Play Wear

With the winter approaching it just makes sense to concentrate on planning a winter toddler girl clothing wardrobe. During the toddler phase your little girl will learn to walk, talk, feed herself, dress herself and hopefully outgrow the need for diapers. When buying toddler girl clothes these major changes in her lifestyle must be taken into consideration. As she becomes more mobile clothing must fit comfortably, be more functional and to save yourself a lot of unnecessary frustration pastels and frills should be kept for special occasions.

It is better to buy a few basic clothing items that can be mixed and matched and buy them to fit properly. These can then be replaced as and when your little girl outgrows them. Tops will more than likely be replaced more than pants as their bodies gain more length than their legs do during this stage of development.

Denims will always be a popular choice for toddler pants

Elasticized pants are ideal as they are comfortable and will allow for easy dressing, both by yourself and your little daughter. Yoga leggings are very popular as they are able to stretch making them extremely comfortable for active little girls. The fact that they are soft and comfortable also means that your little girl can enjoy her afternoon nap without feeling restricted by her clothing. You will need a few pairs of warmer pull-on pants for very cold days. Make sure that they have elasticized waists, are machine washable and choose a practical color and your little girl will be warm and comfortable.

Toddler Girl Tops and Jackets

Yoga tops, layering t-shirts and sweaters are ideal companions for any toddler pants. Crew neck tops are recommended as they will keep your little girl's chest nice and warm and those with ribbed necklines tend to better keep their shape.

Toddlers need at least two thick warm winter hoodie style jackets. Raglan sleeves allow more freedom of movement than set-in sleeves and at this busy age this is important. Many of the hooded tops on the market have full zip fronts and if possible look for one that has a large pull-tab on the zip to allow for easy dressing. Fleece is a popular material for zipped tops but it is advisable to look for those that have low pilling. Poor quality fleece can start to look shabby very quickly and it is worth paying a little extra when buying fleece garments. Jackets with ribbed hems and cuffs usually fit for a longer period of time and look neater than an jacket with sleeves that are too long.

Toddler Girl Underwear

Your underwear requirements for your toddler girl will depend largely on whether or not she is fully potty trained, in the phase of being potty trained or whether you plan to postpone potty training until summer. The various underwear options will be discussed briefly and depending on your particular circumstances various sections of these discussions will be relevant to your particular requirements when shopping for toddler girl clothing.

Look for underwear that is both machine washable and can be tumble dried as this will reduce the amount of underwear that you will require during the winter months.

  • One-piece underwear

While your toddler girl is still wearing diapers these one-piece suits are still ideal for keeping your young one warm and comfortable at night. Choose bodysuits or onesies that have snap closures at the crotch for quick and easy diaper changing routines. The outfits that have lap shoulder necklines make for easy dressing and undressing and although they tend to take a bit longer to dry after washing are the most comfortable fit. Bodysuits and onesies that have hemmed sleeves give the added benefit that these underwear items can be used as outerwear without having the appearance of underwear. Many of the manufacturers do not affix labels to their garments as these can be a source of irritation to your toddler's sensitive skin. As these clothing items fit snugly and provide warmth they are ideal for layering in the cold winter months. Look for preshrunk 100% cotton fabric as these are soft to the touch and this fabric is ideal for underwear. Other one-piece underwear options are coveralls that are basically the same as bodysuits but have snap-open fastenings all the way down the front of the garment.

Thermal unionsuits are an ideal toddler underwear solution as they have both long sleeves and legs. The recommended style unionsuits have sleeve and ankle construction engineered to increase elasticity as these provide a more comfortable fit. Look for unionsuits that have spandex ribbing on ankle and sleeves as these are strong and durable.

* Two-piece underwear

Thermal two-piece underwear sets are ideal for little toddler girls that are potty trained. One-piece underwear will more than likely pose a problem when your little girl wakes at night and needs to go to the bathroom. These sets consist of tops with ribbed necklines and sleeve cuffs and leggings with cuffs at the ankles. This type of underwear should fit snugly as they are not flame resistant.

* Leggings

In very cold weather leggings are an ideal way of ensuring that your little girl stays warm. These can be used under day pants or under her pajamas at night. Depending on the age of the toddler you can choose between footless or footed leggings. You will probably find that your little girl will outgrow the footed leggings a lot sooner than those that are not footed. The footless leggings are also great to use in milder weather for layering with dresses.

* Training Pants

When looking for training pants make sure that the center panel is 100% Cotton as this fabric absorbs moisture well which will help to minimize skin irritation when the odd accident happens. Make sure that you buy the right size as both too big or small training pants will cause discomfort.

Toddler Swim Diapers

Although these toddler girl clothing items are probably not categorized as underwear they are such a fantastic innovation that I find it necessary to mention them. Swimming with a proper diaper on is impractical and without any protection is nerve-wracking for the parent. This swim diapers are the answer as they are re-usable and machine washable and an absolute must if you plan on swimming with your toddler.

Keep Your Toddler Warm this Winter

Keeping Toddler Girl's Feet Warm

No winter toddler girl clothing outfit is complete without a decent pair of socks. It is recommended that toddler socks have fitted heel and toe for the perfect fit and should preferably be made with a machine-washable stretch fabric. The cuff of the sock should have a light elastic in to keep the socks from slipping down.

For little girls that hate wearing shoes the ideal solution are the large variety of "shoe socks" on the market. These socks look like a socks and shoes and have non-slip soles. These are great for playing indoors and they allow the toddlers feet the freedom to grow naturally while keeping them warm. They are obviously not recommended for outdoor use in wet weather.

  • Leg Warmers

Leg warmers can be used to protect a crawling toddlers clothes and knees while crawling and will keep your baby's legs cozy and warm. They can also be worn under wide legged pants for extra warmth.

  • Gloves and mittens

Gloves and mittens are an absolute must in very cold weather but their use should be limited to outings and not for everyday use as they can inhibit play. Toddlers need to learn through feeling as well as seeing which is not possible with covered hands.

Choose comfortable soft toddler shoes

Toddler Girl Shoes

Once your toddler girl starts to walk you will need to buy her shoes to protect her little feet and toes. First shoes should have lightweight flex soles to support healthy foot development. Look for toddler girl shoes that have non-slip, water resistant soles and if possible buy toddler shoes that are machine washable. Shoes with elasticized ankles not only provide a better fit but will not slip off your toddler girl's feet so easily. Shoes with cushioned insoles provide more comfort and ideally shoes should be breathable to keep your little girl's feet cool and dry.

Soft genuine leather shoes have the advantage that they will allow your child's feet to flex naturally while learning to walk. Keep in mind that your little girl will want to start dressing herself and shoes that fasten with velcro will be more practical than those that fasten with laces.Toddler's shoes need to be replaced every four to six month's and therefore it is unnecessary to buy too many pairs of shoes.

Toddlers love playing in the rain

For Those Rainy Days

It is not recommended that toddlers be given umbrellas to use - not even the small children's umbrella - and a raincoat with an attached hood is ideal for your little girl. Good quality raincoats are generally made of  PVC/polyester mixture and for extra warmth should have a lining of polyester or a similar material. Look for raincoats with hoods that have a drawstring as this will allow the hood to fit snugly on the head providing sufficient protection from the elements. Snap closures on raincoats are recommended.

  • Rain Boots

Rain boots are an absolute must if you live in a heavy rainfall area to keep your little girl warm and dry during rainy weather. These boots should be  constructed with rubber uppers and the rain boots with pull-on straps at the top of the shaft will make for easy slip-on. Rain boots with a lining are recommended as this helps to keep your toddler's feet dry. As with all footwear make sure that the boots have non-slip soles. These boots should be bought large enough to accommodate thick socks.

And so to sleep ...............

Toddler Sleepwear

Sleepwear is an important part of your toddler girl clothing. Children's pajamas can meet safety requirements by fitting snugly and/or being 100% flame resistant. Check to see which of the two criteria are being met when looking for toddler girl pajamas and size accordingly. Sleepwear should be machine washable and preferably able to be tumble dried.

There are various styles of sleepwear and the choice will largely depend on personal taste. Younger toddler girls can still sleep comfortably with blanket sleepers with feet but the more mobile toddler will probably be more comfortable with a footless sleeper or two-piece pajamas. There is a wide range of slippers to choose from and once again this will largely depend on personal preferences.
