Updated on November 18, 2016

For first time moms, going out with a baby is quite a struggle. It will test your patience and your ability to carry all your baby essentials in just one bag. Yes, it is a bag, and it is called diaper bags or baby diaper bags. No, it’s not for diapers only. Diaper bag, according to Wikipedia, is also called as nappy bag which is a storage bag with many pocket-like spaces that is big enough to carry everything needed by someone taking care of a baby while taking a typical short outing.

With this in mind, let us take a closer look at what a diaper bag looks like.

Give yourself and you baby a quality time even when outside.

Is it a bag?

Yes, absolutely. Diaper bags are similar to your ordinary bags but it is quite bigger and bulkier. Although the name, diaper bag, may imply that the bag is only for diapers it is not true for this case. Diaper bags are bigger because they are designed to hold not only diapers but as well as all, and I mean all, of your baby’s needs whenever you go out. That includes the feeding bottle, baby wipes, pacifier, extra clothing, small blanket, changing mat, water bottle, sunscreen lotion, and so much more. Sometimes, diaper bags can also contain mom’s essentials such as wallet, cellphone, lotion, and keys.

What are the features of a diaper bag?

1. Wide opening

A diaper bag must have a wide opening for easy access. You should be able to easily see the contents of the bag to easily take them out when you are in a hurry.

2. Zippered closure

Diaper bags must have zippered closures to ensure that the contents of the bag stay inside the bag if the bag gets turned upside down. Velcro and magnetic closures do not offer that assurance.

3. Exterior and interior linings

The linings of a diaper bag should be easy to wipe clean. Cloth diaper bags are recommended because spills are unavoidable when going out with a baby. Polyester or nylon linings are recommended to keep your baby diaper bag in pristine condition.

4. Multiple compartments

This is one of the feature of diaper bag that moms should always look for. A diaper bag with no compartments to keep the contents of the in order is a big no, no. You are creating additional headache once you realize that the contents of your bag is in complete chaos.

Meanwhile a diaper bag with compartments will make it easier to arrange the contents of your bag. It will also be easier to locate whatever you need especially when you are in a hurry. You will never have to sift through tons of stuff packed tightly in one pocket again.

5. Additional features

Most diaper bags comes with a changing mat, so if you find one that offers this feature, that is surely a plus. Some bags also offer stroller clips so you can turn the bag into a stroller diaper bag where you can clip the bag to your stroller at any time without affecting the storage space. If you prefer to carry it on your body or when your stroller is not present some diaper bags offer detachable and adjustable shoulder straps so that you can use the bag as a messenger bag,a tote bag,or a shoulder bag for your convenience.Soft padding may also be an additional feature; however, it may give the bag an additional weight and bulkier look.
