Think of all the authority figures you've had in your life (teacher's, Sunday school teachers,...
Cub Scouts leaders, whatever). Tell me: which authority figure's negativity about you, has influenced you to achievement the most? You know, I talking about adults who may have told you, you can't do this or that because you're not good enough ('You Can't be a writer.' 'You'll never be a painter.' 'You're legs are too short to be a dancer.' Like that).
Someone once told me it's impossible to be a Marxist and Libertarian, just as it's impossible to be a married bachelor or to love what you're apathetic towards. I've been trying ot prove them wrong ever since. In fact, I'd argue that's what a liberal is, the delicous contradiction of wanting to help the poor, yet mantaining civil liberties. We'll see if they overlap.
