It varies with the teen.  I had four biological kids ( all 23-30 now) and 2 step teens ( ages 19 and 23) so I have had a little experience.  Whatever you do, don't cookie cutter the approach, it's not  best to do the "well, I didn't let_________do it , so I'm not letting__________do it"  It's like perscribling the same medication for every person simply based on the fact that they are a person, rather than an individual with unique needs of their own.  They do grow up and out of those years, that's the good news.  Some have to hit the bumps and feel the pain before they realize  they need to take a different route, and navigate themselves to create a healthy journey.  The key is THEY need to learn to navigate, and they have every respectful right to make their own choices, after they have been given the boundaries and advice and progressive responsibility to do so.
