Do You Celebrate Grandparents Day?

Grandparent's Day is celebrated in the US in September on the first Sunday after Labor Day, What are we celebrating? This is a day to tell Grandparents how much they mean to us. Did you know there is a Foundation For Grandparenting, established in 1980 to advocate the involvement of grandparents to benefit the family and society?

Check out the quotes and gifts on this page that are just right to give on Grandparents Day or anytime of the year! You can even send a free greeting card.

Whether you are a grandchild or grandparent, please sign the guestbook at the end of the page. I would love to hear from you.

There's No One Quite Like Grandma

St Winifred's School Choir, from St Winifred's Roman Catholic Primary School in Stockport, United Kingdom, was a choir of children trained by choir mistress, Terri Foley, who released a song in 1980 that became the British Christmas number one single of that year. The song was entitled "There's No-one Quite Like Grandma", and it spent two weeks at number one, and eleven weeks in the UK singles chart in total. The lead vocal was provided by Dawn Ralph.

The official flower of Grandparents Day is the forget-me-not.

When God created grandparents

the world was truly blessed

with all the special joys

that make a family happiest...

For grandparents know how to do

the things that warm a heart,

They touch our lives with loving care

right from the very start...

They show that they believe in us

and all we're dreaming of...

When God created grandparents,

He blessed our lives with love.

Everyone needs to have access both to grandparents and grandchildren

in order to be a full human being.

~Margaret Mead

Lyrics to There's No One Quite Like Grandma

by Terri Foley

THERE'S NO ONE QUITE LIKE GRANDMA

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

Though you may be far away

We think of you

There's no one quite like Grandma

And I know you will agree

That she always is a friend to you

And she's a friend to me

There's no one quite like Grandma

She's there in times of need

Before it's bedtime, on her knee

To us a book she'll read

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

Though you may be far away

We think of you

And one day when we're older

We'll look back and say

There's no one quite like Grandma

She has helped us on our way

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

There's no one quite like Grandma

A love we always share

At party time and Christmas too

We know that she'll be there

There's no one quite like Grandma

She always has a smile

She never hurries us along

Just stays a little while

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

Though you may be far away

We think of you

And one day when we're older

We'll look back and say

There's no one quite like Grandma

She has helped us on our way

Grandma, we love you

Grandma, we do

Grandma, we love you

And we know you love us too

History Of This Day

In the 1970s, Marian McQuade, who lived in the West Virginia, began to lobby for Grandparents Day, which already was recognized in several other countries. In 1973, West Virginia became the first state to recognize the day. In 1978, West Virginia's U.S. Sens. Jennings Randolph and Robert Byrd got President Jimmy Carter to sign a law designating the national holiday on the first Sunday after Labor Day.

Marian McQuade, a member of the West Virginia Commission on Aging, died in 2008 at age 91 with more than 40 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
