Updated on March 6, 2013

Looking for a great appetizer or dish to take to a party or potluck? Cheese Balls are easy to make ahead of time. They also tend to be very popular selections for all types of special and every day occasions.

There are so many different ways to make cheese balls that it is easy to come up with varieties that will please your friends and family members. Most cheese balls start with a cream cheese base, and then take on different flavors depending on what types of ingredients and flavorings you choose to add.

Savory Cheese Ball Recipe: Cheddar Pecan Cheese Ball

  • 8 ounces softened cream cheese (regular or reduced fat, do not use fat free)
  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • ¼ cup sour cream
  • ¼ tsp onion powder
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ cup chopped pecans (optional)

Blend cream cheese, sour cream, onion powder, and garlic powder until well mixed. Stir in shredded cheddar. Form mixture into a ball. If using chopped pecans, roll the cheese mixture in pecans until thoroughly coated. Refrigerate until firm, at least two hours.

Try serving savory cheese balls with: pita chips, whole grain crackers, sesame crackers, Triscuits, and other crunchy snack chips or crackers.

Sweet Cheese Ball Recipe: Apple Cheddar Cheese Ball

  • 1 cup of shredded cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup of very finely chopped Granny Smith Apples
  • ¼ cup of chopped walnuts (optional)
