5 Ways to Enjoy Homemade Chili

Updated on March 13, 2011

When you prepare a pot of chili, you have the basic ingredient for a number of different meal ideas. You can certainly enjoy hearty bowls of meaty chili for lunch or dinner, but you're certainly not limited to enjoying chili in that manner.

5 Options for Eating Homemade Chili

Check out these great ideas for serving chili, and then prepare a pot of your favorite chili recipe for your family to enjoy for several meals! You can even freeze small batches of chili to have on hand to enjoy any time you want to create one of these tasty – and simple – meal ideas.

1. Taco Salad

If you have a pot of chili in the fridge, along with some basic salad ingredients, you can make a delicious taco salad in no time at all. Place chopped lettuce (your favorite kind) in a bowl, ladle hot chili on top of the lettuce, sprinkle with shredded cheddar or taco cheese and top off with your favorites out of diced tomatoes, chopped green onions, sliced black olives, diced green chiles, and sliced jalapeno peppers. Feel free to top off with your favorite flavor of salsa or picante sauce.

2. Stuffed Baked Potato

You can turn a simple baked potato into a delicious main dish by topping it off with chili and a few choice toppings. Cook a large baked potato in the oven or microwave, then split and spoon a generous portion of chili on top of the potato. Top it off with as few or as many tasty toppings as you want. Consider shredded cheddar or jalapeno jack cheese, sour cream, salsa, green onions, or anything else that strikes your fancy.

3. Beef, Bean, and Rice Burritos

Mix some cooked Mexican rice into your favorite chili recipe and you have the perfect stuffing for delicious homemade burritos. Simply fill a soft, warm flour tortilla with the delicious mixture, top with shredded cheese, wrap, and serve. For an extra touch, top off with picante or mole sauce.

4. Chili Cheeseburger

If you enjoy grilling hamburgers at home, try making the next one you create extra special by topping it off with a serving of your favorite homemade chili. Top off the burger patty with a slide of sharp cheddar and place the chili on top. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even toss a few sliced jalapenos on top of it. It's hard to beat the taste of a delicious, gooey, and messy chili cheeseburger!

5. Chili Dogs

The next time you prepare hot dogs for dinner, consider topping them off with a portion of homemade chili. You can even make it an "all-the-way" dog by adding on other great toppings. Add your choice of coleslaw, relish, mustard, ketchup, chopped onions, cheese, jalapenos, and anything else that strikes your fancy!

I hadn't thought of a chili cheeseburger. Sounds delicious. Thanks! One more thing I can do with leftover chili.
