What is Gluten?
Gluten is a type of protein found in the grains like, wheat, barley, oats and rye. It is commonly found in the baked food products such as breads. It can also be found in processed foods such as granola, crackers and cereals. Most of the signs of gluten intolerance and celiac disease are common, thus a complete test is recommended to determine the causes of symptoms.
Common Signs of Gluten Intolerance
A person suffering from celiac disease may show following symptoms of gluten intolerance
- Intestinal gas,
- Change in bowel patterns,
- Bloating,
- Diarrhea,
- Fatty stools,
- Low blood counts.
These symptoms are specifically known as gastrointestinal symptoms.

When a person having celiac disease eats gluten rich foods then the production of antibodies are increases, which deposit under the first layer of the skin and causes rashes like condition such as itching, skin blisters, etc. Moreover, a person may experience the occurrence of dermatitis herpetiformis on shoulders, scalp, face, buttocks, knees and elbows. Moreover, gluten intolerance may also cause destruction of small intestine villi, which looks like a finger. Villi are essential for the absorption of nutrients. If the villi of the small intestine will get destroyed then a person may suffer fatigue, malnourishment, etc.
Moreover, these celiac disease symptoms may cause thinning of bones, which leads to the osteoporosis. Since, the absorption of nutrients is reduced due to the destruction of villi, which results in the lack of calcium. The adequate amount of calcium is required for the growth of the body and bones. On lack of calcium, a person may suffer arthritis and joint pain. Moreover, due to the less absorption of nutrition, a person may show various signs of nutrient deficiency such as anemia, depression, etc. The gluten sensitivity symptoms may also cause muscle pain. It may also cause numbness of the hands and feet with tingling feeling.
According to the National Digestive Diseases Information Clearinghouse, the children are more susceptible to develop the gluten sensitivity symptoms in compared to adults. In children, the celiac disease may cause stunted growth. It may also cause weight loss, dental enamel defects, delayed onset of puberty, etc. The gluten sensitivity symptoms in infant include chronic diarrhea, vomiting, constipation and foul-smelling stools. If a person having celiac disease then his blood test will show increase in alkaline phosphate, anti-tissue transglutaminase antibodies, anti-endomysium antibodies, etc.

The easiest way to manage gluten allergy or gluten intolerance is to avoid the consumption of food product that has gluten. Many top packaged food brands are offering gluten-free breakfast and meals. Additionally, many restaurants are now offering gluten-free diets and meals for their patrons.
