Feeding America One Food Basket at a Time.
There is 200,000 men, women and children that suffer from starvation in the tri-state area. This area consists of West Virginia, Kentucky and Southern Ohio. Due to high taxes, flood devastation, low wages and loss of jobs these states and their counties struggle to help feed their families. Despite the collection of millions of dollars and can food drives this area still suffers. In fact, starvation is so widespread and ever-growing that it spreads across the entire country as well as the entire world.
No one wants to believe that a country as great as the United States would have hunger problems. But, there are 41 million people who struggle with starvation in the United States, this includes 13 million children and 4.5 million seniors.
Aylor Farm's mission is to feed America one food basket at a time. The main focus is to raise awareness of those going hungry and to help those in need. The focus is on the tri-state area that makes up the three states of Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. All three states struggle with this issue and even though there are those reaching out to show support, it is still not enough. There are many families that have lost jobs/careers and have settled for low paying alternative ways to survive. Many children in our area struggle on a day to day basis wondering where their next meal will come from.
Schools are providing breakfast and lunch for children before sending them home. Many of these children will not get a dinner and rely on the schools to feed them. During the summer months, Programs like Backpack Buddies who provide backpacks full of food for those needing assistance. This organization has been fighting childhood hunger for the last five years once the schools close for the summer months.
This is where Aylor Farm will come into play. Aylor Farms will be a self-sustaining farm that will grow many of the foods needed to provide a healthy meal for those individuals. The farm will be located in Lawrence County Ohio where the cost of land is low and the soils are rich in nutristion. The farm will have several large fields set up to plant seed and harvesting vegetation that will provide food baskets for the needy and support the already programs put in place to feed those who are struggling. This farm will be a constant working farm that will have winter, spring, summer, and fall festivals to raise money for the farm and to provide support to the community. During the spring, summer, and fall the farm will be open to the public so they can enjoy a day spent on the farm. This farm will be set up in two parts, as a non-profit and as a profit organization. The non-profit side will be set up so that individuals can donate and all donations will go back into the farm.
The profit side of the farm will also be set up to provide funding for the non-profit side of the farm to help support the farm when donations are not enough. The selling of Manure along with balls of yarn from the angora rabbits and wool from the sheep will be a few ways the profit side will support the non-profit side.
The Idea for Aylor Farm
Several years back the Aylor's found themselves in a situation that so many Americans today find themselves in. Samantha was jobless and was struggling to find a job. Their income was from her husband's retail job and the bills outweighed their income. Before they knew it the Aylor's were struggling to make ends meet. Turned down for food stamps because they were told Jack made ten dollars to much for them to get. Before they knew it they found themselves going days without food in a country you would never believe could happen. So they lived off the family garden and asked for money from family when needed. They started a lawn service with a push mower they already had and a weed eater. By the end of the month, the Aylors had a steady business with loyal every week customers. They were able to pay back family members and manage their bills. Today Samantha is working a steady job with insurance and her and Jack are doing better, but neither of them forgot they're struggled and by going through this struggle was shown there are many that are struggling the same way.
Jack and Samantha put their heads together and decided they will focus on building a farm with large gardens. After all, it was a garden that kept food on their table. They believe that by getting donations and sponsor they will be able to build such a farm and in return donate food baskets to those in need. By making the farm self-sustaining and promote festivals and participate in town functions will enable the Aylor’s to have the ability to establish a well-producing farm. In return, the Aylor’s will be able to supply sponsors with the stability of a great product and help them get a return on their investment. Jack and Samantha both have college under their belt and have been educated on how to run a business. Samantha has organized this plan and with her life experiences, education and determination to make it work. This farm will be an outstanding asset to the community.
The Big Plan
So think about this for a second, Farmers have been doing this for years. This is not a new idea but a resourceful one and if done correctly will actually provide what is needed to help feed the hungry. But instead of just feeding the hungry, this farm will also provide a little something more to the community and the county. In other words, if done correctly this farm can become a tourist attraction and will help build revenue for all three states. It will be large enough to grab the attention of tourist from all over the country, but small enough that only a handful of people can maintain. There should be a campground and RV park for those wanting to stay a while along with a nice restaurant for those wanting a home cooked meal with fresh veggies straight from the garden. The barns will be equipped with automotive feeders and cleaners for the stalls to keep down labor cost. The main attractions will be the Clydesdales who will pull the wagons with the food baskets at parades and festivals and also for the hayrides offered at the farm. There will be Spring, Summer, Fall and winter festivals at the farm to help bring in revenue.
Aylor's Farm will also team up with the local schools and Universities who have programs dealing in agriculture and equine programs to have students work on interns or for their college credit. These students could work the farm and be trained in various types of skills that assist farming.
