Beautiful braised beef with red wine and mushrooms

A beautiful meal, that would be great to cook for that special somebody, who deserves a treat. Top it with a glass of red wine and Put butter or sour cream in the split jacket potato. This meal can be made entirely in the oven. So save some time and get cooking. Don't forget to light those candles to add a little romance to the evening. This recipe is for one person, so i recommend doubling the ingredients and making two of them, so you have one each.

beefylicious enjoy! :-)

* 1 small red onion

* 2 medium carrots

* 1 small turnip

* 2 celery sticks

* 200g/ 7 oz of beef topside, in one piece

* 2 tsp of beef bouillon

* 150 ml/ 1/4 of a pint of red wine or water

* 1 tsp od Dijon mustard

* Freshly milled salt and black pepper

* 1 tbsp of oil

* Sprig of thyme

* 1 bay leaf

* 1 large potato

* 6 button mushrooms

* 2 tsp of plain flour

1) Preheat the oven to 160 degrees C, Fan 145 degrees C, Gas mark 3

2) Chop the onion, carrots and turnip. Thickly slice the celery. Pat the beef dry with kitchen paper.

3) Next pour 400 ml/ 14 fl oz of water into a measuring jug, stir in the bouillon, red wine, mustard and some seasoning.

4) Heat the oil in a flameproof casserole, add the beef and cook quickly for 2-3 minutes on all sides until browned. Lift out with a slotted spoon. Add the vegetables and cook, stirring occasionally for 5 minutes.

5) Remove from the heat. Put the beef on top of the vegetables, add the thyme and bay leaf and pour the liquid over. Cover with a tightly fitting lid, put in the hot oven and cook for 45 minutes.

6) Scrub the potato clean and prick all over with a fork. Place on the oven shelf next to the casserole and cook for a further 1 hour.

7) Trim, clean and halve the mushrooms. Put the flour in a small bowl and mix with a little cold water to make a smooth paste.

8) Finally, remove the lid from the casserole and stir in the flour paste and mushrooms. Return, uncovered, to the hot oven and cook for a further 15 minutes

      Well I love beef and the ingredients sound yummy. I will wait until the weather cools a bit. It is too hot to use the oven. However, be sure I will bookmark this recipe. Sounds like a good company dish.
