Black Walnut Nutmeats Removal

I went out in my yard and picked up walnuts that were emerging from the snow filled yard. They fell from the tree last fall and since I had no where to store them, I left them lay

The nutmeats were still in them. I picked an ice cream pail full and brought them into the basement. I used a plastic bag to contain about twenty of them and proceeded to hit each one with the hammer.

Once I hit them all, I poured the bag out onto a griller screen. Many of the small bits of nut fell through. I had a plate under the screen to catch them. I used a large bowl to hold both the plate and the screen.

The nut meats still stuck in the shells were picked out. I used a metal shishkebab stick to poke them out.

Once out, I placed them in a plastic bag. I collected the empty shells to take outside later.
