Guide to Buying a Chocolate Fountain

Updated on July 27, 2009

A chocolate fountain is an elegant party piece that will add to the festive atmosphere of any birthday, wedding, party and holiday gathering. Of course, if you really like chocolate that doesn't mean you can't indulge more often. If you are not sure whether you should invest in one or not this article will help you make up your mind. We will cover the benefits of chocolate fountains, elements to look for when considering purchasing a unit for your home, as well as looking at a few of the more popular units in more detail.

Benefits of owning a chocolate fondue fountain

Besides the obvious fact that it is a conversation piece and quite festive, the chocolate fondue fountain, as it is also called, has the benefit that it can be set up ahead of time and it frees up the host or hostess to handle other tasks. It is also quite unique and will have your guests talking about your party for months after, and who doesn't want to have their friends ooohing and aaahing from enjoyment.

You know with dessert how you sometimes miscalculate or someone shows up out of the blue and you just don't seem to have baked enough cake. It's uncomfortable to have to tell your guests that there's no more dessert because you ran out. With the chocolate fountain that is one problem that is definitely solved. If you run out of dipping ingredients it only takes a few minutes to slice up some fruit and the day is saved. Of course, it also helps that your guests can have as much as they like without having to feel uncomfortable to ask for seconds, thirds or fourths or... You get the idea.

Another benefit is that it will satisfy even the most picky eaters since they can choose their own dipping ingredients and generally, the only people who don't like chocolate are the ones who haven't tasted it.

Elements to consider before a purchase

Firstly you should think about the general size of the gatherings you will be using it for. You can get units small enough for ten people up to the professional size ones for large gatherings that serve even a hundred. Of course you could go all out and get the world's largest fountain. It would be useless to get a unit for ten people if most of your parties consist of thirty. You could end up with a riot. The reverse is also true.

Some other things you should look at are the size of the dipping bowl to reduce the mess, the ease of assembly and disassembly for quick clean up and whether or not it's safe for your dishwasher. You wouldn't want to be scrubbing away while your dishwasher gives you an evil laugh and relaxes, now would you.

Something else to consider is the weight of the unit when you want to move it or have to set it up. If it's too heavy you may not be able to handle it on your own. Then you would be forced to call your bodybuilder neighbor over to help and ... Actually that's not such a bad idea ... Moving on...

One thing you will definitely want is for it to have a quiet motor. If you switch it on and it sounds like you brought the lawn mower inside and your hubby has decided to do the remodeling at the same time it will definitely put a dampener on the festivities. Who wants to have to scream at each other at a party?

Chocolate fountain reviews

Rival CFF4 2-Pound-Capacity Chocolate Fondue Fountain

This unit is quite popular in part due to the fact that it is quite inexpensive versus other models. It has a heated reservoir that holds up to 2 pounds of chocolate, which should suffice for around 10 people. The chocolate fountain measures 10 by 10 by 13 inches. It has an auger-style pump and comes with eight fondue skewers and a detachable serving tray.

The Rival is very easy to use and it is suitable for kids as well because you don't have to worry about the pot getting too hot. It is very easy to clean, all it requires is a quick soak in soapy water and then straight into the dishwasher.

Wilton Chocolate Pro Fountain

This particular fountain is considered one of the most user friendly and reliable units on the market. Clean up is easy as well as assembly. The chocolate flows quickly and since it holds up to 4 lbs of melted chocolate it will satisfy a reasonably sized gathering of people.

Sephra Select Chocolate Fountain

Sephra Chocolate Fountains is considered the leading chocolate fountain manufacturer in the world. They manufacture a whole range of fountains from professional units to those for the avid home user.

This particular fountain is very easy to assembly and runs very quietly. It is also very user friendly so you don't need a degree to operate the unit. It is excellent even for longer operating time as it can run for at least five hours constantly with no problems.

Another great feature of the Sephra Select Chocolate Fountain is that its heated basin allows you to melt the chocolate right in the fountain, which is a huge benefit. Otherwise say hello to the microwave or even the bain-marie, which can take forever. It has a 4 lb fondue capacity which will serve around 20 people.
