Cake bunting is a fun, inexpensive way to customize or personalize a dessert for virtually any occasion. People who are crafty and enjoy simple DIY projects will love putting together cake bunting for the next Valentine's Day or family birthday party. It's a great method for adding an extra special touch to a special occasion.

Please note that there are very few, if any, video tutorials available for making cake bunting. However, there are a number of videos about making larger decorative bunting, such as bunting for a mantel or fence. It is relatively simple to modify or adapt these tutorials for cakes.

Happy crafting and baking!

Consider the following factors as you design your own cake bunting.

Shapes

Some of the most popular shapes for cake bunting include triangle pendants, hearts, flags, and circles. Of course you don't have to stick to these ideas. There is no limit to the possible options. For example, check out the carnival ticket cake bunting link below. Carnival tickets are the perfect choice for any circus themed event.

Are you making your cake bunting out of paper? Instead of cutting out each shape individually, consider using paper punches.

Tip: This concept is applicable for cupcakes as well as regular cakes! You just have to scale it down a little.

Occasions

Birthdays seem to be the most popular occasion for making cake bunting. Valentine's Day is also high on the list. Of course, again, there is no reason to feel limited to these options. Everything from St. Patrick's Day to a med school graduation is fair game. It is not hard to customize existing tutorials for different occasions, such as switching up the colors or the wording. Taking this extra personalization step can make a big difference when it comes to tying together a party theme.

Lettering

Lettering is not a requirement for cake bunting, but it can add a fun touch. Many people use scrapbook letter sets (i.e. stickers, rub on) or digital scrapbooking tools, such as Cricut machine, for their letters. There are also free printable letters available online, such as the set linked below. Typically people put one letter on each triangle pendant or other shape. Consider including numbers, such as an age for a birthday, and/or symbols, such as an exclamation point, as well.

Materials for the Bunting

Popular options for the material bunting include paper, washi tape, ribbon, and fabric. All of these materials are inexpensive and readily available at big box craft stores and online. It is not difficult to find colors and patterns to suit specific events and occasions. As cake bunting is a small project, it can be a great way to use up scraps from other projects.

Materials for Supporting the Bunting

It can be easy to get caught up in making the bunting without thinking about how you will attach it to a cake. Baker's twine and ribbon are popular choices for stringing bunting while bamboo skewers and straws are frequently chosen options for holding up the bunting. Some people dress up their skewers by putting the skewers in the cake first and then putting decorative plastic or paper straws over them.
