Chocolate Caramel Candy Apples for Halloween ,once you know the basics ,its so much fun creating and designing the finished candy apple and your kids will think you stepped right out of candyland!

For crust

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch pieces, frozen
  • 4 tablespoons (about) ice water

  • 3lbs Golden Delicious Apples (about 8) ,peeled ,cored ,cut into thick wedges.
  • 1/4 cup of flour
  • 2Tablespoons water
  • I 1/4 cups of sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons unsalted butter

 Streusel Topping

  • 3/4 cup all purpose flour
  • 6 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) chilled unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

Make filling:
Combine apple wedges and 1/4 cup flour in large bowl and toss to coat. Let stand while preparing caramel.

Stir sugar and 1/4 cup water in heavy large saucepan over medium heat until sugar dissolves. Increase heat and boil until syrup turns deep amber color, brushing pan sides with wet pastry brush and swirling pan occasionally, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Add butter and remaining 2 tablespoons water (mixture will bubble vigorously). Return to heat and stir until smooth. Pour caramel over apples; toss to coat. Let stand until apples release juices, tossing occasionally, about 10 minutes.

Position rack in bottom third of oven and preheat to 375°F. Roll out dough on floured work surface to 14-inch round. Transfer to 9 1/2-inch-diameter glass pie dish with 1 3/4-inch-high sides. Crimp edges decoratively. Spoon apple mixture into prepared crust. Sprinkle streusel over pie.

How To Make Chocolate Caramel Candy Apples

Remove the stem from each apple and press a craft stick into the top. Butter a baking sheet.
Place caramels and milk in a microwave safe bowl, and microwave 2 minutes, stirring once. Allow to cool briefly.
Roll each apple quickly in caramel sauce until well coated. Place on prepared sheet to set.

Perfect treat for Halloween ,party time and especially since the Fall provides apples in abundance.

Caramel candy apples are delicious to eat and kids love making and decorating them.

Dont like bubbles appearing in your caramel apples?
Soaking the apples in very hot water for about 10-15mins before dipping will force the gas out of the apples, magic ,nice shiny smooth appearance.

The very advice I can give you though is this
Make sure before dipping apples into the caramel that apples are DRY and at ROOM TEMPERATURE or the Carmel will just slide right on off those babies.
Patience and doing the small things well ,will definitely produce awesome eating caramel apples!

Chocolate Caramel Apples

Chilling apples overnight or even for a couple of hours will greatly improve the finished result.

Granny Smith Apples are so far the crispiest apple for making caramel apples ,but I like variety and better than wasting what you have on hand ,so use whatever you have in the kitchen or if you have orchard apples falling from the tree (any tree) ,why not have an apple recipe week-end with a couple of friends and save that nutritional food from going to waste!

Chocolate caramel candy apples dipped in pistachio and mint chips -delicious

Chocolate Caramel Apples

Fuji or Large Granny Smith apple
lollipop or Skewer sticks
Melted dark chocolate
1/2 cup nuts ,your own preference, (a varitey has an interesting effect)
Wax paper

Insert sticks into apple.
Place apples into refrigerator while preparing chocolate. This step prepared a couple of hours earlier helps keep the apple firmer and is nicer eating.

Melt chocolate.

Dip apple into chocolate ,like the picture ,twirling as you end.
Puts Nuts (or other topping) into separate bowl and roll apple until covered in topping as desired. For birthdays ,icing children's initial onto candied chocolate apple adds that nice personal touch.
Place decorated apple onto wax paper, standing upright.
Refrigerate uncovered for 15 minutes.
For more variety on your apple, you can add more decorative (white, stripes) edible numbers ,letters or personal designs chocolate covering after the first 15 minutes.

For The Caramel Part, do the following before dipping apples into chocolate (use one pound of caramel):

Heat caramel slowly until it becomes liquid on stove top.
Dip apple into hot caramel until coated
Stand upright on waxed paper and let set for 15 minutes

      Hi Heather

They should be fine. I would perhaps place them in a container and cover them (if you have one tall enough) just to make sure they 'dont sweat'too much. The ones sold in store stay set ,because they use perservatives ,but for that length of time you should be fine.

Hope the birthday girl has a wonderful day!!

      Hi Hendrika

Yes,I grew up where toffee apples were a once in a while treat, bad for our teeth lol(because the toffee was hard! ,but happy childhood memories. These coatings should be much softer and

      Stay safe n warm there.

It is winter here in South Africa now so this is a good time for me to experiment with apples as apart from citrus fruits it is all that is available. As a kid I love the 'toffee" apples, but now I think I will prefer the chocolate ones.
