Homemade Vanilla Extract

I love vanilla flavoring in almost every sweet dish I make. It is however, very costly to purchase real vanilla extract, although you can get fake vanilla flavoring for a good bit cheaper. This is a simple recipe for making your own real vanilla extract at home. You can make it in a large quantity instead of buying small bottles at the grocery store.

Yields: Several Servings


  • 2 cups Vodka, I use Smirnoff.
  • 5 vanilla beans, cut into 1" pieces


  1. Pour vodka in a jar with a tight lid. Add the vanilla beans.
  2. Put the lid on the jar tight and let sit for 6 to 8 weeks. The vodka will turn an amber (yellow) color after a day or two.
  3. Once you have used about half of the extract, you can add more vodka to cover the beans. When the vodka no longer becomes a darker color, the flavor is gone and new beans need to be used.
