Farmers' Markets in Northern Massachusetts
Although spring and summer are the proverbial seasons to enjoy farmer's markets, they are often open all year long. Farms and farm stands are a great way to enjoy fruits, vegetables, local specialties, and even flowers.
I've picked five local favorites, and I'm always on the lookout for more! The farms listed are all easy to get to as they are not located far from major roads. So no matter what town you live in, you'll be able to find a farmstand near you.

Mann Orchards Farm Store
Farming since 1877, the Mann Orchards are a local institution. Their farm stand and bakery provide customers with wonderful produce, baked goods, prepared foods, and a genial atmosphere.
The first thing you see as you drive up is the apple orchard - rows upon rows of apple trees! I am lucky enough to live five minutes away so whenever I get the urge for a fresh-baked pie, I can pop right over.
Cider Hill Farm
If you are an apple lover, be sure to visit the Cider Hill Farm Store -- they sell 65 different types of apples from their own grounds! Dip them into honey from the bee colony located on site. You can even see and hear the bees buzzing in the gigantic honeycomb located in the store at an observation point. My favorite are the raspberries, though.
They also sell maple syrup tapped from Amesbury trees as well as local crafts. There is also a bakery in the store, and their cider donuts are tender and delicious.
Smolak Farm Stand
The Smolak Farm Stand opened in 1985, and customers can purchase anything this extensive farm produces, be it fruits, vegetables, even Christmas trees! And with a Treadwell's Ice Cream location on site, you will find enough ways to satisfy your sweet tooth.
You can even call ahead to make sure your favorite produce will still be available at the end of the day -- they'll hold some for you!
Barker's Farm
Located on Route 125 in North Andover, Barker's Farm Stand is a local favorite for apples, corn, and strawberries, and it's very easy to find.
The farm store offers fudge, along with baked goods. Poke your nose around the back and say hi to the barnyard animals if you so desire.
Connors Farm
At different times during the year, find these items and much more:
- vegetable seedlings, a variety of flowers, and other potting necessities like fertilizer and planting advice
- tomatoes and lettuces, fresh eggs, and raspberries
- pumpkins, native apples, and hardy mums
While there, enjoy something sweet from Richardson's Ice Cream... but be prepared to wait in the summer. The lines can be long, but it is so worth it!
